Tragedy And Stupidity

The first was yesterday. Somewhere in Houma, Louisiana an oil line broke and spilled a LOT of oil out into a wetland area where there are a great deal of White Pelicans, to my understanding. I haven't heard much more on the situation, but it is easy to imagine what it will do to the local environment. The pelicans were already said to have been suffering from the effects.

Then this morning. A blaze in the sky. The Space Shuttle Columbia. It's all over the news. All over other journals here on LJ, and probably DJ too. And I know a lot of people are probably sick of hearing about it. I'm sick of seeing how the media treats situations like this and hypes them so badly to effect the emotions of the public. My condolences to the friends and the family who lost their loved ones.

But these were just every day people who were doing their jobs. They loved their jobs and they had a passion for it. The day they signed up they knew the risks involved in this line of work. It's really no different from the risks involved with other lines of work. The media needs to stop dramatizing everything. Period.

That and the assholes who were dancing around outside the studio just need to be drug out into the middle of the street and shot. This is perhaps the thing that infuriates me the most about the situation (besides the speculation on how it happened). I'm not sure about other channels, but I was watching our local Channel 4, and the broadcast comes from New York. The station is right there next to the street. I've seen it before.

Well, good old Dan is sitting there doing his job. Reading the reports as they come in, taking calls on the phone, the whole nine yards. And in the background behind him you see the windows of the studio. And you see random people crowding in the windows grinning like fools. Some dancing and hopping up and down. Waving. Grinning. Laughing. Pointing. Motioning their friends over to come and look and join in. Some had shopping bags. Some were rambling on cell phones while they were waving, probably in the hopes they could say "Hey look at me on national TV!!" and I think that all of that behavior is just fucking disgusting. NO respect whatsoever for the entire situation at hand, and that is appalling.

Excuse me, but when 9/11 struck you didn't see fucking idiots like these today dancing around outside the studio windows waving their arms for attention just so they could have their moment of glory and laugh and say they'd been on TV and seen by the world. What the fuck is wrong with people? Stupid fucking monkeys.

rant, general
