Chapter 21

Shou was looking at his babbling boyfriend fondly. He loved the way Hiroto’s eyes shone when he talked about something that excited him and the way he described his story with the movement of his hands. Most of all, though, Shou loved the way Hiroto smiled and laughed freely.

There was no pretense in his smile. Not like all the smiles he always saw on his other dates. The genuine smile on his boyfriend’s lips made Shou felt like Hiroto was truly happy being with him. The small gesture actually touched him. Never once had he dreamt that someone would be really happy with him, that he was wanted. Not since that day.

“I can’t stand it!” A twelve year old Shou overheard his mother’s shout just after he walked into the house. Needless to say, he got excited because, for once, his parents were home when he was coming home from school. He quickly ran to the living room where he knew the voices had come from.

“Mother-” Shou stopped just outside the living room and smiled. His father was there, too!

“Well you’re the one who brought him into this world.” He heard his father say.

“Don’t forget that you also took part in it!”

Shou stood silently as he listened in confusion. What were they talking about?

“I never wanted a child in the first place!” His mother shouted again.

“Neither did I!”

Shou stood there with his eyes open wide at the declaration, shock evident on his young features. His parents were talking about him, about how they didn’t want him. The realization smacked him across the face, caused his heart to skip a beat and his mind to blank out. He stepped back quietly and ran from the house, from his parents, from everything.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” Hiroto stopped talking when he felt Shou’s intense stare. He fidgeted a bit. Somehow, it made him a bit shy. Those eyes made him feel like Shou was looking deep into him.

Shou smiled, “Nothing. I just like staring at you.” He leaned closer and stroked Hiroto’s cheek, “You’re just too cute.”

“You and your sweet mouth,” Hiroto huffed, looking away from the taller boy to hide his burning face. “Did you even hear what I was saying?”

“Of course! You were talking about your first time going to the zoo with your mom, right?” Shou’s voice wavered a bit when he answered and he had a faraway look in his eyes.

Hiroto turned back to face his boyfriend when he heard the uneasiness in the other’s voice. “Shou? Is something wrong?” he asked, touching the older boy’s face gently.

“Mmm…nothing...” Shou shook his head lightly and rested his forehead on Hiroto’s small shoulder. He felt ashamed of himself for still being a bit jealous of Hiroto and his mom’s relationship. He knew it was wrong but sometimes he just couldn’t stop the feeling. It just so confusing…One moment he felt so warm hearing Hiroto talking about his mom and then the next he felt envious of them.

Feeling something was not right the smaller boy raised his arm to stroke Shou’s hair gently. “Shou, remember what you told me once? Something about not being alone?” he whispered softly in the other’s ear. “Well, you’re not alone. I’m here. You have me…so please don’t keep everything to yourself.”

You have me. Those words really touched Shou’s aching heart. He had someone to rely to now. He was not alone anymore. A soft smile began to grow on his face as he raised his head from Hiroto’s shoulder to meet with his passionate eyes.

“Thank you,” Shou said honestly as he pressed his forehead against Hiroto’s.

Hiroto gave a smile of his own and Shou found that the smaller blond looked really tempting now, with sparkling eyes, plump lips and a tender expression. The boy was just so attractive, so it was not Shou’s fault that he found himself leaning closer to kiss the adorable creature before him.

“Okay, stop.” A black tray appeared from nowhere between him and his boyfriend. Shou grabbed the tray and threw it back to Tora. It was really hopeless to get any closeness with Hiroto when the protective boy was still around.

A small hand touch Shou’s hand and he saw Hiroto give him a small smile. “Later,” Hiroto mouthed to him when Tora looked around the cafe as if he was searching for something.

The ex-playboy’s face lit up at that. After their work was over, he and Hiroto would take refuge at his home where no one would disturb them. For once, he couldn’t wait to get home. He gave his boyfriend a quick peck on his cheek while Tora was still distracted.

“Shou.” Oops…Did Tora catch him? Shou gulped and darted his eyes to the taller boy’s direction. To his surprise, Tora avoided his eyes and fidgeted a bit in his seat.

“Um…Did Saga said anything to you?” the usually reserved tiger hesitantly asked his arch enemy. He really didn’t want to ask the playboy anything, but Saga was absent again today and the thought of their last encounter left him feeling uneasy.

“He’s sick,” Shou replied after a moment of silence.

“Hee? Does he have someone to take care of him?” Hiroto asked worriedly, remembering the time when Shou was sick and no one was there to take care of him.

“I don’t know, but the last time I heard from him he told me that he was feeling lonely,” Shou shrugged, pretending not to care though he secretly watched Tora from the corner of his eyes.

“What? We have to go there!” Hiroto tugged at the two older boy’s shirts.

“Pon, we’re working right now,” Shou pulled Hiroto back, stopping his panicky boyfriend.

“But-" With an evil grin, Shou turned the worried Hiroto to their silent guest.

Tora looked to the side when the other two stared at him. He knew what they wanted or rather what the playboy wanted. “Tora-" The dark haired boy could feel his best friend's pleading look.

“Fine, I’ll go but it's just because you two told me to,” Tora said as he glared at them. He was worried about Saga of course. He just didn’t want to admit it to Shou. The playboy had that knowing look, and damn if he would give Shou the satisfaction of knowing that he was right.

The new couple grinned and nodded. “Good,” Tora smiled. “Nao, please watch over them for me,” Tora grabbed his friend who just came back from the restroom. “Don’t let that guy make any funny moves, okay?” he pointed to Shou.

“Okay!” Nao saluted his older friend with a big grin, “Leave it to me!”

Tora wasn’t sure about Nao’s expression. The younger boy looked as excited as if he had just gotten to play with a new toy. But Tora didn’t have any other choice, did he? It was better than leaving Shou without supervision. He just had to believe in Nao. Picking up his bag and quickly paying Kai for his drink, he said goodbye to the others and gave them a worried look before he left the café.

As soon as the dark haired boy left the room, Nao turned to his favorite couple and grinned. “Don’t worry, I won’t bother you and Hiroto!” He gave a thumb up to the playboy who winked at him, “Just do whatever you want to lahim!”

“Nao!” Hiroto yelped as Shou glomped him, cursing his friend when he heard him giggle.

**

“Thank you, please come back again,” Hiroto bowed to the leaving customers.

From behind Shou secretly let his eyes feast on his boyfriend's cute ass as he bowed before he hugged him, giggling slightly. Without Tora, he felt like he was in heaven. Hiroto turned in his arms and nuzzled his chest affectingly, making Shou smile even wider. No Tora, no customer, and a willing Hiroto were really heaven. He kissed the top of Hiroto’s head.

“Shou?” the soft voice of his boyfriend made the playboy pull back a bit to look at the flushed Hiroto, urging him to continue talking.

“Could we not do this here?” Hiroto gestured his hand uncomfortably toward their ‘guardian’.

Shou’s eyes turned to Nao who watched them curiously from his seat. “Ah, don’t mind me. Please just continue!” he said when he realized that the couple had stopped because of him. Smiling, Nao continued to eat his strawberry cake while keeping his eyes on them. He couldn’t help himself. Shou and Hiroto were such a cute couple, and the fact that Shou couldn’t keep his hand off his friend was so romantic! “Come on, just kiss him,” he urged.

The words made Hiroto duck his head in embarrassment. Mumbling an apology to his affectionate blond, he made his way to the counter where Kai was arranging the freshly made cakes.

Shou pouted. It seemed everyone was against him.

**
The tall dark haired boy was waiting in front of Saga’s house after he rang the bell. Minutes passed but no one had answered the door. Suddenly he felt stupid. Shou had hinted that Saga was alone in his home. How could a sick person answer the door?

He was about to try turned the knob when the door was opened and a woman in white clothes come out. Tora blinked. Was that a nurse's uniform she wore? “Yes?” She smiled to him.

“Good afternoon, ma'am. I’m Amano Tora, Saga’s friend,” Tora bowed to her politely.

“Ah, come on in!” she pulled the taller boy into the house. “It was always nice to meet my son’s friends,” she said cheerfully as she ushered him to the living room. “Wait here,” Saga’s mom pushed him down to the couch before she went to call her son.

“Saga!! Come down!” she yelled from the bottom of the stairs. Faintly, Tora could hear someone yell back but the sound was too faint to be heard clearly.

Apparently Mrs. Sakamoto felt the same because she called him again with a louder voice, “SAGA!!!”

“Uh, it’s alright Mrs. Sakamoto. I don’t want to bother him if he’s not feeling well,” Tora said to the older woman.

Saga’s mother shook her head. “Nah, he’s just being lazy. SAGA!!” she yelled again when his son didn’t come down.

“I’m coming! Geez, why are you so impatient?” Tora could hear Saga’s voice get louder as he stepped down the stairs. A disheveled Saga froze on the bottom stair when his eyes met with Tora’s.

“Saga where are your manner?! How can you greet your friend looking like that?” At his mother’s question, Saga looked down to himself and realized that, because he had just gotten out of bed, his hair stuck up here and there and he was only wearing his boxers and an oversized shirt.

“Shit!” He quickly ran back upstairs to change his clothes.

Mrs. Sakamoto frowned. “Don’t swear!” she yelled one more time before she turned to the guest and smiled at him, “Please, just sit down. I’ll make some tea.”

Amused, Tora walked back to the couch and sat down while watching the long haired woman make her way to the small kitchen. This woman seemed to be able to show one hundred expressions in mere seconds. She was so different from his mom.

A few minutes later, a much cleaner and neater Saga came down and sat nervously beside Tora. Saga’s mom came back with a small tray. She put one cup in front of Tora and the other one in front of her son. She plopped down on the smaller couch beside them and put the tray on the table, eyeing the two curiously.

“You’re really my son, Saga. You have good taste in men,” Mrs. Sakamoto said proudly.

Tora almost sprayed the tea from his mouth when he heard the statement. He forced it down his throat, making him choke.

“Mom!” Saga cried out in embarrassment.

Coughing, Tora looked disbelievingly at the seemingly calm woman.

“Don’t look at me like that,” Mrs. Sakamoto giggled at Tora. “I've known about him being that way ever since I once caught him trying my make up.”

“Oh God…” Saga slouched even further in the couch, his arm covering his eyes. Could this be any more embarrassing?

“At least I have another child, so one day I'll be able to hold a grandchild,” Saga’s mother happily clapped her hand. “Oh, speaking of him, I’ll go check on him!” The cheerful woman picked up the tray and went upstairs.

Saga groaned. How dare she leave them just like that after she embarrassed him in front of Tora? Was she just there to make fun of him? When the sound of his mother’s footsteps couldn’t be heard anymore, he slowly raised his arm from his face and peeked at his crush. “Sorry about that,” he mumbled.

“I think she'll get along with Nao,” Tora let out a small chuckle, trying to lighten up the atmosphere but failing at it.

Saga looked down to the wall across him. “Why are you here?” he asked.

“You’ve been absent for two days,” the dark haired boy replied.

Saga sighed, “My brother is sick. I have to take care of him while my mother works her morning shifts.”

“Your brother is sick?” Tora narrowed his eyes when Saga nodded. Damn that Shou! How dare he lie to him?! And he was so stupid to get fooled easily by the playboy. That’s why Shou didn’t seem to worry about his best friend! Growling, Tora began to plan his revenge.

“Is that all?” Saga looked to the side as he asked, trying to hide his disappointment.

“Huh?” Tora was startled out from his evil plan at Saga’s question. “Yeah, I guess…”

“You can go now then,” Saga gestured to the general direction of the door. Well, if Tora didn’t have anything else to do here, he might as well leave before Saga lost his composure again. What had he hoped when he saw Tora from the stairs? A proclamation of love? An apology? He shook his head.

“Damn it, Saga!” Tora grabbed Saga’s shoulder and turned him so they were face to face. “What’s wrong with you?! You’ve been acting weird since that afternoon at the café!”

Saga shrugged off Tora’s arms and glared at him, “You want to know what’s wrong? This!” With that, the smaller one cupped Tora’s cheeks and pulled him forward so their lips could meet.

Surprised, Tora pushed Saga away the moment their lips touched.

“See? This is the problem,” Saga laughed bitterly as he locked his eyes with the shocked boy's. “You told me to wait for you but did you really mean it?” he asked. “Your attention is always with Hiroto!” Saga’s voice wavered.

“It’s not th-" Tora tried to reason but Saga raised his hand, stopping the taller boy’s words.

“I’m tired, Tora,” the smaller boy looked at Tora again. “I don’t think I can wait for you anymore.”
**

“Here,” Kai gave Hiroto and Shou two white envelopes.

Shou blinked as his boss held one out to him. He took it, eyeing it carefully. “What is this?” he asked as he raised it to the lamp, trying to see through the thin paper. Kai just patted his shoulder and left the two boys.

Hiroto, who had a satisfied grin on his face, showed off his own envelope to the taller man happily. “It’s our payment!” giggling, he hugged it tightly to his chest. He always felt giddy every time he earned money because of his own hard work. This way, he could help his mother a bit.

“What are you going to do with your money?” Hiroto asked when he saw Shou look at the envelope in his hand with a contemplative expression.
“It’s a secret,” Shou grinned as a thought crossed his mind.
