So today was the fun part of my birthday celebration, by which I mean the part where my brothers join the family festivities and hilarity ensues (as we all discuss video games endlessly).
This year, Mom told me that neither of my brothers had asked for help in coming up with ideas for presents for me. I trust Mat; he has a strange talent for choosing unique and clever presents. Chris usually doesn't even try, so the fact that he didn't ask for help made me think that he must have gotten me something related to something that we both like (which narrowed it down to Zelda or Futurama) and probably some TV show on DVD (which is his latest addiction). And since Twilight Princess hasn't been released yet (because if it had been, Chris would have been chained to his Nintendo wearing a sign around his neck that said "If your name isn't Link or Zelda, shut the hell up and go away"), I was pretty convinced that I was getting Futurama: The Complete First Season for my birthday. But then it occurred to me that Zelda used to be a TV series, too, and that I've been telling Chris about Scrubs a lot lately. So I figured it was one of the three.
And sure enough, when I opened the bag with my present in it, I saw Scrubs:The Complete First Season and crowed victoriously, "I KNEW IT!"
Then Mathew gave me his present, prefacing it with, "This is the best present I've given anyone ever," which sets a pretty high standard. I peeked into the box and saw "H...Lis..." and what looked like the corner of an insect-like wing and thought, No way. But I was right: a T-shirt with a picture of Navi, complete with her trademark slogan (y'know, the one that inspired many a piece of fanart depicting Link with a fly swatter, as well as
this comic). I laughed so hard I nearly fell over, and he said my reaction was exactly what he had hoped for.
Then, as I was picking up my presents as we were leaving the restaurant, Chris handed me back the bag and said, "Here, carry them in this." I was only half paying attention, but then I did a double take and got a stupid but highly amusing look of blank shock on my face, because at some point he had slipped Scrubs:The Complete Second Season into the bag, which frankly just confused me for a minute, until I realized that I wasn't hallucinating.
So, in summary, I have a good two days worth of Scrubs that I've never seen before and a T-shirt that rocks everything not least of all because only one in ten people would understand it (well, maybe more than that; the Zelda fandom is pretty big). And my brothers give good presents. :)
(Awww...)
