Now you've made me curious about Stardust. :D I've googled the trailer, and it does look like fun. Not sure I'll come round to looking for the dvd, though.
Neil Gaiman is fantastic, totally agree with you on this one.
Wouldn't be so sure about kids reading the book after seeing the film. At least not a great percentage of them, anyway. (That's coming from a person who works with kids on a daily basis. There are the readers who will devour anything the can get, and there are the watchers, and it's quite difficult to make the latter read sth else than comics.)
Ah, yes, the Neverending Story. I used to love that book and I missed so many details in the first film. I didn't even watch the sequels. I was quite annoyed they chose that cute little guy as Bastian. Bastian was SUPPOSED not to look too good, to be fat and plain, and yet to be the one to save Fantasia. That would have been such a splendid message. But no, they had to bow to mainstream and cast a pretty, slim and delicate little boy. Mind you, I've got nothing against pretty child actors, but they've got plenty of other roles for them.
If you haven't read Stardust, I really think you should give it a try (even if you'll never watch the movie). I work with children as well (from 10 to 13 years old, to be precise) and in a few cases it happens that a good movie -and my enthusiasm for the book the movie is from- brings the kids to read the book. You're right that is not common, but even if it happens once a year I'm happy.
Yes, Bastian, aka the fat boy with a face the color of cheese- not really the actor. And what about Atreiu? He should have had olive-green skin... I don't know if it was because they didn't have much in the special effects department back at the time, but the movie definitely left out (or changed for the worst) so many details... if the ever do a remake, I hope it will be done by Tim Burton...
