Take My Body

[+] 2 days in a row? Wow. I feel like I should, like, pace myself.

[+] In fannish news, I am still just watching shit that is like six years old, and letting my dvr pile up. (Though Michael has way more shit piled up. He watches every show ever on Discovery, like all of that Gold Rush, Ax Men, Swamp Men, Moonshine Men...let me tell you, that shit is BORING.)

[+] In any case...Downton Abbey. Still. It's so, so lovely. And so funny at this point, because Mary and Matthew keep addressing each other as 'Cousin Mary' and 'Cousin Matthew'. I totally forgot that they did that. (And then just kind of miraculously fell in love.) I've just seen Tom Branson's first episode. My gosh, he was so sweet in the beginning! He was in love with Sybil, like, right away and I think she's only meant to be about 16 then. But him peeking through the parlor window to see her in her little Jasmine outfit?

Great. Now I'm crying.

[+] And on that note, more answers from yesterday's meme:

Comment here if you want to play, and I will give you three-six couples that I associate with you, and you make an entry in your journal talking about those couples and fics that you wish the universe would write for you.

Yes, you read that right. Sybil/Tom were my die-hard OTP of the show, and they were the loves of each other's lives. And Mary and Matthew, the same for them. But *after*...

This photo came out as promo for s4 and it got my wheels spinning. It made sense for them to have come together in grief, but after the last two seasons, it's made even more sense. Tom calls Mary on all of her bullshit, her snobbishness, her tendency to push people away, and her mean streak. And Mary can figuratively let down her hair with Tom, who enjoys her intelligence and her sense of humor and respects her. I think they are each the best friend they've ever had. They're great partners on the estate, and as they're pretty much raising their children as siblings, it just seems the right thing to do. It's not the passion of their first loves, but it's adult and it's friendship and trust, and I do see a good deal of chemistry there as well. I like Henry Talbot a lot, and he and Mary do fit together nicely, but it could have been something building for the past three seasons, instead of just these past four or five episodes.

As far as a specific idea for a fic, this scene:

I guess JF was apparently doing something topical, based off stories that King Edward VIII's and George VI's nanny was abusive to the latter and doted on the former, but it would have had so much more punch if Mary had been the one to discover this. She'd been sleepwalking in a daze since Matthew died and it would have been great to see her wake up and stand up for her niece in this way. As it is, it's a good scene, but there are no greater story ramifications, and Nanny West is never heard of again.

Oh, SHOW. What high hopes I had for you. I don't even know what's going on? I had kind of held out hope for a minute after Francis died, but Bash and Mary barely cross paths. It was the shock of my life that they had that moment of recognition late last year (I walked this path first).

Basically I just wish I had the time and patience to completely rework the series. Lengthen the first season, spend more time on all of the girls being silly and fifteen and running around the castle. Francis and Mary sort of both realizing that they want very different things but still trying for the sake of their countries. And much, much more of Star-Crossed Bash and Mary who love each other madly but fight it at every delicious turn.
