A new year, a fresh start. Life goes on, and I'll try to keep up.
The holidays were mostly nice, with incredibly wintery weather for Halifax in December. I spent time with all of the people I meant to, if not enough. I wasn't ready to go back to school.
I have a lot to say about the last two months or so, but I have to think a lot before I do. So, in the meantime,
movies I've seen recently:
Sweeney Todd: I don't really need to say much about this. It was about as good as it could have been, a wonderful vision of the elements of the show, presented as a true film rather than a filmed stage production. My quibbles are minor: I missed the chorus, mostly.
I Am Legend: There was some spectacular imagery. Will Smith was excellent. The situation, while not exactly new, was intriguing enough that I was curious as to how it would end up. There were many elements, though that I thought didn't quite mesh, in terms of story, theme, tone, and message.
Stardust: I watched this on the airplane. I loved it. It was like the Princess Bride, though less quotable: it was quirky and funny, and made me incredibly happy.
Ratatouille: Also on the airplane. Also enjoyable.
The Boys from County Clare: at JAMS' house. This was cute, especially if you love/know anything about traditional Celtic music. It's the kind of quiet little film that partway through, you expect something terrible to happen like someone dying or having a drug habit. But in this, it doesn't. The central conflict is trying to win a Ceilidh competition. The simplicity is almost like a kid's movie, except that it's not nearly as sappy, and they swear and get naked a couple of times. But everything about the film is understated, I very much enjoyed it.
