I hope, that in the 21st century, we all unlearn this tendency to be uncritically objectivist about the meaning of human activity. I think it is certainly an open question whether the explosion of the sun has anything to do with the value of, say, me typing this right now.
Hah! Perhaps the weird response giver needed a more blunt and emphatic explanation to understand that the admin's life seems excruciatingly more futile, frustrating, fruitless, demeaning, unrewarding, and pathetic than the lives of all others nearby.
epictetus_rex, I sort of think finding meaning in human activity while being aware that it will all get lost in the flood later is an agreement with Russell's point instead of a disagreement. However, I may have misunderstood you, and phrases like "uncritically objectivist" make me suspect that you may be referring to philosophers or philosophy I haven't read yet. Did I miss your point?
As to all of us unlearning it, I bet the vast majority of people will keep chasing worldly goals without worrying about the meaning of human activity, same as always, although maybe by "we" you only meant philosophers.
