Ph.D. ∨ Bust

I’ve started looking into graduate school programs in the last week or so. My intent is to specialize in philosophy of mind and philosophy of science, and so the schools I will be applying to are somewhat known for those specialties. I've been told that one ought to apply to 8-10 programs. The following is the list of the schools I'm thinking about applying to, and is in no particular order:

University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill
University of California, San Diego
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Brown University
University of Pittsburgh
Princeton University
University of Massachusetts, Amherst
University of Maryland, College Park

I’ve also signed up to take the GRE in early December, have asked three of my professors for letters of recommendation, and have started work on what (I hope) will turn into a reasonably good writing sample.
Anyone know of any other programs that I should be looking into, or things I should be doing to prepare? Also, if you’ve gone through the graduate school admissions process before, do you have any tips or suggestions that I should know about that might make the process a little easier?
