Owen Hargreaves The biography of Manchester United's Midfield Maestro

Fame is only the sum of those misunderstandings which gather around a new name.

Determination is very important. I arrived at Bayern with a lot of other players from other countries who had great potential but could not go to the next level. Some went home after two weeks. It was not lack of ability but more to do with their mentality. You must have the desire to compete. - Owen Hargreaves

(on Arsenal - Bayern CL match)
An extraordinary fact that emerged was that until Ashley Cole came on after 75 minutes Owen was the only Englishman on the pitch. The irony was that he was playing for a German team. A few weeks earlier Arsenal had become the fisrt Premiership team to field a side composed entirely of overseas players.

Owen made an entry for himself in the history books when he scored the first goal in new stadium in the 28 minute of the match against Borussia Monchengladbach.

Sven was telling everyone it was the 'stuff dreams are made of'.

In interviews his voice was well-modulated, speaking in the curious hybrid of mid-Atlantic and German. For all the puppy eyes and Pre-Raphaelite curls, Owen had incomparable backbone. What came across was a certain steeliness with a clear sight of his future global targets.

They doubled their lead when Rio Ferdinand had on of his attacks of sleeping sickness and was caught in possession by Harry Kewell.

...into the midfield combo of Lampard, Gerrard and Scholes....and Scholes was, well, Scholes...

Terry was rapidly becoming the new Jack Charlton of football, a dinosaur of a player in the modern game.

So that was it. England went out of a competition they should have won and Portugal lost in the final to a superbly organised but dull Greek side.

Much has been made on Owen's accent. One football blog even went as far as creating a pie chart setting out the various influences on it. It merely listed his parents from Bolton and Wales, his Canadian upbringing, his lenghty career in Germany and in recent times his move to Manchester. Plus there was the exposure to the various dialects, for example the Glaswegian of Fergie and the Swedish of Sven. Plus the Cockney and effected Estuary English vowels of Joe Cole, Frankie Lamps, Rio and the chaps. How this cocktail of accents and argot would have gone down with the 8 million plus viewers would be hard to say. It would have been a decided improvement on the incoherent Beckham and the inane mumblings of John Terry though.
