The John portrait that left a wound on my heart

Jun 14, 2009 20:48

This is a portrait I drew of John back in 1980.

Actually, the story behind it is a bit ironic and sad; a friend had asked me to do a portrait of John Lennon for her one day while we were listening to the "Let it Be" album. Must've been sometime in late '79. I started this specific drawing in early 1980, and ironically was trying to finish it up on the day of 12/8. Of course, we all know the news that shocked the world later that evening.

It was hard to work on it again after that, so this is how I left it. My friend let me keep this portrait....said she didn't have the heart to take it from me. I wound up drawing a different portrait of him for her sometime later.
