Unrequited love
176 words, Peter

He was just a simple man, a mage who had turned the simple procedure of transmutating metals and infusing it with magic to an art. He was nothing more but a mere smith, producing weapons for the Order and its fighters.
Peter did not fight. He could defend himself in battle, but he could not stand the idea of hurting someone else, or having blood splattered all over him. Some had called him weak because of this.
Maybe that was why he admired her so much. He was only a couple of years older, and he had watched her grow up from when they were young. A child's affection that had grown into full love when they both turned teenagers. Peter had always tried to be there for her, to get her attention, to give her the best things he could produce. But she never saw him.
The attention of the Order's young leader had always been focused on someone else. He just watched from the distance, no longer trying to reach out to her either.

A cold
296 words, Ralph and Liz

Hachoo!
That was the first sound Liz heard when the front door opened and Ralph entered their little apartment. It was soon followed by the sound of a sniffing nose and the door being closed. When Ralph entered the kitchen, where Liz could be usually found around 5pm, she had to do her best not to giggle at the miserable sight of Ralph.
"What happened to you?" she asked as she helped Ralph to a chair. Water puddles were all over the kitchen and a very large one was now forming around the chair Ralph was sitting on.
"What do you think happened?" Ralph grumbled as she sniffed again and tried unsuccessfully to wipe some of the water from her face. "A throw in the lake is what happened. Never mind that it's already late November and it's freezing cold without being covered in water and dirt and whatever else floats in there." A shiver passed over her body. "I vote for a warmer place after this job is done and that we don't leave until winter has passed."
The angry grumbled retelling of her story made Liz giggle, though she stopped at the dark glare Ralph gave her. "Well, let's get you out of those clothes," she suggested in her gentle voice. "And then a warm shower. You'd only get a cold if you stay in those clothes." She pushed some of the wet strands behind Ralph's ear and placed a kiss on her cheek. "I'll make you a cup of hot chocolate with whipped cream after it."
Ralph could hardly resist resting her head against Liz' warm body, but she still managed to hold that off and get up for the shower. "You know... it wouldn't surprise me if I already got a cold."

Unknown to everyone
112 words, Akiko

The night had come again. Akiko watched the sky turn dark. Now was the time where everyone would go to sleep. The world would be covered in a hushed silence and pleasant dreams would spin imaginary worlds to dreamer. Not for her.
She didn't know sleep or pleasant dreams. She was different from normal people; when she slept, her world was one of horror. She did not know happiness, fun, friendship, love... She didn't feel them. She could feel anger or fear, but sometimes not even those emotions were present.
Empty.
She was empty inside. But no one knew about it. Because when she was empty, she simply faked the emotion desired.

Broken
210 words, Liz

Broken arm, broken leg; she had seen it all before. And not only seen it, it had happened to her as well countless times. How often hadn't it happened that she had to take her brother to the hospital without their father knowing about it? And how often hadn't it happened that Terence had to use his lunch break to secretly take her to a doctor? Too often.
Too often had she laid on the floor, her body and spirit broken for unknown reasons. And sometimes even without a reason at all. Her father didn't need much to smash everything and everyone into pieces. Shattered tables and chairs, broken glasses and plates... It was amazing and terrifying what her father could do in a rage. It was even more terrifying what he could do while remaining cool and calculating.
There were times Liz wished she could be at a better place, a happier place. She used to dream about leaving her father behind and run away with her mother and brother to a safer place, where everything remained whole and no one was in pain. But even that dream had been shattered and left broken in her mind. That was all she was. That was all this household was.
Broken.
