Now, on to the fic. I must say, I really like what you did with this one. One of my favorite aspects was the fact that the narrator was Antonio, who acts almost like a fly on the wall, except for the fact that he's still directly involved in the events. And as usual your descriptions are wonderful. I love the line about the ending like a snuffed out wick. It made that moment extremely tangible, but also the image of the smoke curling up added that edge of darkness that's so prevalent in this fic.
Also, I love how you played with the power difference between Francis and Gilbert, as a nation and a former-nation. My gosh, that crack. There aren't many moments in fics where my jaw literally drops...
Now, on to a bit of criticism, if you don't mind. Francis was such a bastard in this fic, and I liked it. The concept of a dark Francis is very enticing somehow. It's not covered so much typically, and it's nice to see other interpretations of the characters. However, he still felt slightly off, somehow. I feel awful that I can't give you a more concrete example of what I mean... but it seems he was almost a little too cool. I think that would definitely be there, but I think it might be a bit overdone in this case. He seems almost too controlled. Yet I find it fascinating how he can shift from one tone to the next, from that crack to "mockingbird trills".
As for it's unfinished state, if you hadn't said so I don't know if I would have considered it as such. I can see how it could be a continuable fic, but I think it also stands alone very well.
