Fai jumped a little as something brushed his sleeve, sidestepping and looking over his shoulder at a boy and his persocom walking down the street hand in hand. He took a moment to watch his head of dark hair, her white-and-pink ears.

He sighed, licked his lips, and turned, tucking his earbuds a little deeper into his ears as he resumed walking. On impulse he reached into his pocket, locating his PDA and pressing a few buttons on it.

“Accessing: Flourite Family Audio Files.”

He pressed a button.

“Now playing ‘Christmas 2010’…”

“…tie, turn that thing off. You know how shy video cameras make me.” His mother’s voice, warm and shy in his ears.

“Mommy, don’t be so shy! No one’s ever going to see it but us, and besides, you’re prettier than a movie star, anyway.”

“Fai, stop that, you’re making her blush.” Fai smirked; even at thirteen years old, Yuui sounded like some old man. “Mother doesn’t like it when you do that, and you should respect her wishes.”

“But Mommy’s smiling, Yuui! And she’s blushing, too!”

“I recall you doing the same thing when you played piano onstage for the first time, Fai.” And there was his father’s voice, gentle and humored yet firm as he pressed his point. “And remember Mother turned off the camera when she saw how much you were stammering and blushing?”

“Th-that was different! That was -”

“Fai…”

“…Oh, all right.”

As Fai skipped to the next track, he thought once again how happy he was that he’d always left the audio on, if not the visuals.

“Now playing “Tokyo News, December 3 2011”…”

“…police think that the fire was the fault of a third party. The event was the Celes Corps. annual charity gala, aiming to try and raise money for families of the victims of the Rainbow Bridge tragedy.

“Among the deaths were Kuyou and Ashura Flourite, the CEO. They are survived by their twin boys, Fai and Yuui Flourite, 14. Their aunt Hisui declined comment…”

Fai almost skipped forward to Yuui’s e-mail, but instead flicked his playlist off and stowed his earbuds in his pocket. He had no desire to listen to his brother’s voice telling him how much fun Italy was, how Fai would have to come visit someday, how he’d be coming home soon in that quiet, listless voice, almost as though he were completing a chore.

They hadn’t spoken in five years; it scandalized some people, that two twins could live such distant and separate, almost isolated lives. It just made Fai relieved, relieved that he didn’t have any constant reminders of the life he’d lost, didn’t have anything to remind him that he wasn’t alone in this world.

Fai rounded the corner, lifting his head at the sight of a large metal butterfly structure set atop a fairly large building. Fai licked his lips, bowed his head, nearly turned around and walked away to get a Duklyon burger and shake, just forget about this whole ordeal.

Fai wiggled his toes in his tennis shoes; his feet started moving before he even realized it, making his way towards the Clow Corp. building.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained, he thought, and at least it would put bread on the table.
___

She did not touch him, but as Yuuko Ichihara stood next to the boy’s sleeping form she had to resist the urge to remove the human girl from his arms. That would not only wake the boy, but send him into a panicked and possibly defensive mode, something that Yuuko did not relish.

The intercom buzzed once, loud and impossibly brief; she moved one hand and pressed a manicured finger to the button.

“Yes, Watanuki?”

“Your interviewee has arrived.”

“Thank you. Would you please draw up the necessary employment papers and forms?”

“Right a - wait a second, you haven’t even interviewed him yet!”

“Oh, that’s right!”

Watanuki sighed with relief on the other line. “Thank goodness…I thought for a second that you would -”

“You need to bring up some liquor too. It’s been a whole fourteen hours and nineteen minutes since I’ve had something to drink. Offer some to our new employee, too. He’s going to need something to drink while he’s filling his papers out.”

“…You’ve been counting?” Watanuki’s voice sounded scandalized and she could just see the frown forming on his face.

“Have it ready for me by the time I come out!” she chirped, lifting her finger and ending the connection just as Watanuki started yelling into the mouthpiece. It wouldn’t do to wake the children, after all.

Sighing, Yuuko stood, pausing by the loveseat and watching the boy’s face. For all that Fai was skilled, she thought, this boy was too delicate an issue to let even Fai handle.

No, she thought, as she closed the door behind her and started walking down the hall, Fai needs something else. Something different, but no less of a challenge.

Something….

She passed a door, paused, lifted a hand and pressed it to the glass. A dark figure lay flat on a metal table, his arms and feet restrained and his eyes closed.

…something like that.

With a small smile she dropped her hand and continued to her office.
___

“Ah…no. That’s okay. I…don’t really drink.”

“See, that’s what I try to tell her!” the persocom huffed, pouring some Sauvignon into a wine glass. “She never listens, though, she just goes ON and ON about -”

Fai stopped paying attention, wondering absently if the little rant was a recording or if it was AI. Instead he drew small, aimless loops on his papers while looking at the pictures on the wall - it only lead to him eventually looking down at the employment forms, frowning thoughtfully.

So she wanted to hire him without an interview. Well, he wasn’t complaining. It meant he’d be able to eat.

…It was curious, though. Why would she hire him without first making sure he was qualified for the job?

“Mr. Flourite.”

Rather proud of himself for not jolting in surprise, Fai looked up to find Yuuko smiling down at him, already twirling her drink in hand.

“Ah.” Fai’s lips curled up into a too-easy smile as he stood and offered his hand. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Miss…”

“Ichihara. Yuuko Ichihara. But you can just call me Yuuko, if you want.” Her hand was soft as it slid into his, soft but for the power of something coiled just beneath it.

“I…uh, Ms. Ichih - Yuuko-san, do you want to do the interview here, or…”

“I want to tell you the terms of your employment.”

Fai blinked. “…Eh?”

Watanuki cut Fai off. “Yuuko-san, call from Doumeki and Himawari-chan.”

“Put them through,” Yuuko said with a smirk, watching as Watanuki processed the command and made the connection.

“Yuuko-san, what -”

“Ichihara-san?” Watanuki’s voice was markedly different - deeper and more thoughtful.

“Yes? You found the apartment all right?”

“Yes. We’ve already packed all of Mr. Flourite’s things and will leave soon.”

Fai sputtered, eyes widening. “Wh-wh…Y-Y-Yuuko-san, wh -”

“Thank you, Doumeki. Do you remember what room to put Flourite-san’s things in?”

“Yes. Is that all?”

“That should be. Thank you, Doumeki-kun.” She turned back to Fai as Watanuki ended the transmission, grinning, oblivious to his open mouth and the wide eyes.

“I…what…y-you just -”

“This will be your home from now on, as long as you’re employed with me,” Yuuko said, standing, her smile only widening at Fai’s growing look of horror and indignation. “Room and board will be provided for you. All you have to do is complete the tasks I assign you.”

He continued to stare at her, torn between horror and anger. Then he finally settled on resignation, a too-easy and practiced smile making its way across his face. “You certainly have an odd way of doing things, Yuuko-san,” Fai murmured, laughing half-heartedly.

Yuuko raised an eyebrow, as if she couldn’t quite believe that Fai gave in that easily; then she dismissed it with a wave of her hand, beckoning Fai closer. “Come along, then. Your first task is waiting for you.”

“A-already?” Fai stood, jogged the few steps to get to Yuuko, slowed down so he walked alongside her. “No orientation or anything?”

Yuuko gave him a flat look. “You came from a programming background, correct?”

“H-how did you -” How much does this woman know about me, and why am I still surprised?

“We do background checks on all potential employees,” Yuuko explained, turning a corner so rapidly that Fai had to stumble back to keep from running into her. “You graduated with a Master’s degree in programming. And it just so happens that we need a programmer with your degree of skill.”

Fai frowned thoughtfully. “For what?”

Yuuko stopped in front of a door, reached out, turned the knob and pushed it open. “For this.”

Fai blinked, brow furrowing in confusion, and stepped into the room to find -

Fai blinked. Once. Twice.

Then realized he was blushing furiously and hid his face in his hands.

“Y-Yuuko-san…”

“Yes?” She sounded amused, dammit.

“Is…is that a persocom?”

“Yes, Flourite-san, it is.”

“…Wh-why i-i-is he n-n-nak…nak….”

He peeked over his hands to find Yuuko looking at him with mild surprise. “Why Flourite-san, it’s simply for scientific examination.”

Scientific examination my ass, he thought, shaking his head and following Yuuko to the man’s side. “What’s he doing here?”

“He was brought here about a year ago. Our best programmer left a long time ago, though, and I’m far too busy to do what is necessary.” Yuuko looked up at Fai, all traces of teasing gone from her face.

Fai’s looked up and met Yuuko’s gaze. “And what’s my role here?”

“This is your first assignment, Fai. A diagnostics scan revealed a large amount of encrypted information and firewalls. Your job is to decode them and find out what he’s hiding.”

Fai licked his lips, looked down at the persocom on the table. It was amazing, the level of detail people put into making their persocoms so lifelike - excluding the red external audio receptors [1], the man could easily pass for a sleeping human.

Fai’s eyes drifted from the face to the chest…and then lower.

…Yes. He could definitely pass for a human.

Yuuko chuckled beside him, holding up a USB cord. “Shall we hook him up to a monitor and wake him up?”

“Oh! Oh, y-yeah.” Still blushing, he flipped open one of the ear units and plugged it into the monitor.

As he turned back to the persocom, finger extended to press the start-up button, something in him paused. He wondered, for a moment, if this was worth his entire life, if maybe he should just tell Yuuko-san he wasn’t interested and walk out of here right now.

Common sense told hi to get away from this.

Curiosity propelled his finger forward and made him press the “On” switch.

The monitor thrummed to life, a green cursor blinking near the top. Fai watched as the persocom’s eyelids twitched, then fluttered open, revealing red irises.

Fai would have continued watching, but just then something flickered across the screen and drew his attention back to the moniter.

Designation? _

A name, Fai thought as he stared at the word. He’s asking me to give him a name.

Fai glanced at the persocom out of the corner of his eye - he just looked so serious sitting there, staring at the ceiling as though it were some fascinating page of a book, with that frown on his face -

A smile Fai hadn’t felt in a long time snuck across his lips; Fai’s fingers flickered across the keyboard.

Designation?
>Kuro - puu _

Fai hit the enter key and leaned forward, chin resting on his wrist, and waited to see what would happen.

Processing… …
>Invalid designation. Please try again.

“It seems he doesn’t like the name you gave him,” Yuuko said, her voice wry.

Fai could almost feel the screen glaring at him and couldn’t help himself as he bowed his head and chuckled.

Designation?
>Kuro - rin

Fai was having so much fun with his new project that he didn’t hear Yuuko sliding out of the room, closing the door behind her gently. Her smile faded.

“So all the players are here,” she murmured to herself, brow furrowing. “I will do what I can to help you, Flourite-san. But if it comes to that, you will have to make a decision - and I can only hope you make the right one.”

Content for now with how things were proceeding, Yuuko walked back down the hall to her own office. She had a mission of her own to complete.

Author’s Endnotes: So there’s chapter one. I do have a fair idea of where I’m going with this, and hopefully I’ll be able to answer any questions in the coming chapters - though I’m not sure how long this will be. I’ll also be entering a one-shot fic which I hope to write soon.

Comments/concrit appreciated. Thanks so much for popping in, guys!
