Last night I went to a speech by Romeo Dallaire. Tonight I had my fae encased in plaster and straws stuck up my nose.
Romeo Dallaire was amazing, he's charismatic and genuinely funny. He spoke about Rwanda, child soldiers and the loss of live. He spoke about the reasons the UN members sat by and did nothing, why Yugoslavia had aid while Rwanada didn't. In all, he made me desperately want ot read his book, to see another view. The fighting in Rwanada was barely touched by the news here, largely ignored because of that.
Besides Rwanada, and with no beration of the audience, he moved into the age we live in, the mass confusion and fear around it. Very stirring speech, it was, full of calls fro Canada, as a middle power, to lead the way in the new age.
Yes, Canada and the other middle powers leading the way. Not controlling, or overthrowing, but leading in the safety and development of developing countries. I swear, if I could talk like him I'd be starting my own religion. But then, I think much of the force of his words came from where he's been, and what he's seen. I remember one quite from the speech, as I desperately avoided bringing my notepad:
"Do you kill children who kill? What's the right thing to do?"
Personally I can't imagine making choices like that, or some of the others he made. All I can really do is feel pride for the people who -do- face these every day.
On a less gloomy note, I bought more winter clothing today, a coat and big clunky sorrel's to keep me from losing my toes. Winter is starting to frighten me, I don't -want- to be out in -30 weather, much less ten degrees colder.
As for the plaster, a friend of mine offered to make me a mask for halloween, hence the plaster. He needed a mold of my face. So, 15 minutes with my face encased in plaster bandages, with bits of straw preventing my from suffocating, and voila! Sadly, we had to vaseline, so I got my face rubbed down with olive oil. I still ended up with hair pulled out, but it was better than I had expected after I scrubbed my face clean.
In revenge, I get to make a cast of him, so it should all be good..of course, -I'm- bringing a camera along for the fun.
