I've always had something of a knack for geography. I enjoy looking at maps and have spent long hours pouring over my family Britannica Atlas which includes maps of the whole world in vast open pages. I enjoyed looking at the various networks of roads and the landscape which surrounded them. As a child I'd often imagine what it looked like at a particularly sharp turn in the road, or at the edge of a river or lake. On every road trip I've ever taken, I've marveled at how maps correspond to real distance, and fought my desperate curiosity to find out what was just over that next ridge.
Not so with my delightful girlfriend. When I first met her, she was wholely dependent on her Garmin GPS navigation system for driving around Portland. She has since grown confident in town, but often struggles when we get farther afield. Her natural sense of direction isn't great, and though she's traveled more than many Americans, most of it was by plane, which has a tendency to make the world feel like a series of unrelated points.
Well right now we're plotting out our California roadtrip and she's revealed a surprising gap in her knowledge.
"I didn't realize that Los Angeles was so far south!"
Indeed, for a moment, the young lady seemed to think that the west coast's largest city was actually further north than San Fransisco!
Right now,
our tentative trip plan is looking something like this but our road trips can often lead to unexpected and impulsive places?
Luckily, wherever the two of us find ourselves, we'll likely be enjoying it.
That's what led me to Destination: Anywhere, a playful soul number from 1967 by The Marvelettes.
Actually, while this song sounds upbeat, it's actually about a woman trying to leave town after her relationship goes sour, the singer explaining to the station agent that she just wants out of town, and is willing to go anywhere. Not originally what I'd intended but I can roll with that.
