a grumble, plus some self-congratulations ...

Years ago, I un-cluttered the house. Many items were purged, and those things that i wanted to keep but did not know what to do with went to the spare bedroom, to be dealt with later. I'm finally dealing with it, or at least, some of it.

Today I went through my many boxes of CDs and put them back on the shelves in their new upstairs home. The shelves were fuller than they used to be, because I also added brian's CDs to the collection. (We had exactly one CD in common, Ray of Light by Madonna.)

By best guess, I've got like 1000 physical CDs. I don't have a database, and I don't have more than 5% of them ripped (I started a great ripping project a few years ago, but Crap! that was taking forever....), but I generally believe that I have a good idea of what I own.

As i got the last CDs on the shelf, I thought, "huh, I don't think I saw that disc of Neopolitan guitar music from the 50s with the funny little man on the cover!" And I checked, and, nope, he's not there! No big set of Portuguese fado, either. Nor the disc from the woman from Cape Verde that isn't Cesaria Evora. Nor that disc from that not-so-good folk band that played at Henflings, but they were really nice, and the guitarist bought me a pint and flirted with me, so i bought a CD, and he wrote something unrepeatable in the liner notes to me.... Nor the Basque Stick Guys CD, one of whom married the Inuit throat singer (oh, and where is her demo CD) ...

I am fairly impressed that i can pick out at last count 23 CDs from my collection that aren't there. But I am also fairly annoyed that a bunch of them went missing. And it's all really obscure stuff, too, stuff that if i'd loaned it out, i think i'd remember...

music, de-pack-ratting, gripe
