So I tried to watch the American remake of Life on Mars tonight, because I really loved the British original and I haven't seen it in a long time (for whatever reason the DVDs aren't on Netflix, grrrr). Plus, I have the apartment to myself tonight b/c Justin's calc class had a test, and he and the other TAs get to spend the night grading. So I got about three minutes in to the episode--the hostage one, where they're going to shut off the machine and all.
No. Oh no.
I realize that three minutes is not long enough to provide a balanced critique, and that's not what I'm gonna do. I have one thing to say, and that is:
GENE HUNT IS NOT SOME OLD FUCKING CODGER! I don't know who casted that actor, but he is most emphatically not DCI Gene Hunt. No no no no no. I don't even know who he is, but he's short and ugly and old and completely lacking the in-your-face quality Phillip Glennister imbued Hunt with. And the fact he wasn't even at the party they opened the episode with--no way. He'd have been up on the desk dancing with bottle-blond Annie, or whatever they're calling Annie's character in this version.
Yeah. That's it. I may try again, but I doubt it. I may have started watching Life on Mars for David Simm, but I kept watching it because of the absolutely original storyline--and Phillip Glennister. Without him, it's just ain't gonna fly. Thank God there are only two seasons for American TV to desecrate.
