So, I lurk on fandomsecrets for the lulz. Honestly, there's not so much 'lulz' as there is 'omgwtf that is MESSED UP.' It's 40% Supernatural (a show I don't even LIKE but that I know more about than I ever thought I would due to the rampant ship wars that get slung around on here... and by the way, INCEST IS SO SQUICKY, IF I EVER WATCH THIS SHOW IT WILL BE RUINED FOR ME BC ALL I READ ON THIS SITE IS MANIFESTO FOR WINCEST), 10% Hetalia (more slash), and whatever-the-fuck-else. Posts that are polarizing are also usually trolls; I assume a lot of the anti-GaGa ones are trolls (but mostly because I ♥ her, haha).
This one reeks of troll: Waaahh wahhh I hate anime fans from countries other than Japan. But then, as I started reading the comments, I got even more annoyed... just goes to show you that you shouldn't read responses to trolls because they just annoy the shit out of you. (Same with the CNN forums... but I won't go there...) Some of these ridiculously mean things that were thrown around about anime fans were disheartening, and reminded me why I was too embarrassed to share my interest in anime/manga in the first place. Sure, I make fun of the crazy-ass fans like everybody else, and sure, I am also a little freaked out by people wanting to be Japanese that are not. It really bothers me when people want to go to Japan based on what they watch in anime/read in manga... they turn the country itself into a novelty when it should be appreciated as a whole. Not everything in Japan is sunshine and roses--just like any other culture. So yes, I can understand the vitriol against anime 'otaku' if this isn't a trolling post. But I still believe it is, mostly because of the hypocrisy surrounding the statement. It's okay for Japanese people to have anime/manga but NO ONE ELSE because it's disgusting? Like I said, it's not offensive, just ostentatious.
The worst part was watching fans of anime jump in to defend their positions. Oy, it just made the hole deeper. Sometimes fandom is just too ridiculous, which is why I am perfectly content with lurking...
Bottom line is, everyone is dumb. The people who shoot down anime or fans of anime in other countries are stupid. The people who defend their love of anime and the culture without accepting the complexities of the culture are stupid. And, more than anything else, I'm stupid for reading this stupid community. ;P
