Gripe #9

Yeah, I'm sorry, guys. Sorry, sorry, sorry.

But it BUGS ME!

Knickers, not panties. Pants, not shorts. Please, please, when writing brit-fic, use the appropriate names for underwear. Otherwise it just jars the hell out of the flow, and I'll be sitting here going: "what's he doing wearing shorts under his trousers?" If it's kinky speak, then panties works just fine for the girlies, but if it's just a throw away descriptive line, like: "the shop window displayed a sign for panties: 4 pair for 10 quid. She thought about her top draw and the abysmal state of her underwear, and ducked into the store." Then it's knickers. Knickers, knickers, knickers.

And no, this has nothing whatsoever to do with my hatred of the word 'panties'.

Also, 'shorts' are an outerwear. Never ever use it for mens underwear outside of American-themed fic (do they use 'shorts' in Canada for underwear?). They are things both girls and guys wear in summer, when it's hot, when they go to the beach, when they walk around town, when they're at the gym, when they're running. They look like this: SHORTS.

These are pants. Short for underpants. In NZ we just call them undies or underpants, but in England I hear the 'pants' word fits them quite well. (In NZ 'pants' is commonly used for trousers. *shrugs* I dunno either. Everything else is British.)

Also, stockings, not socks. And I mean for the men. We don't use that word for them in NZ, but they most certainly do over in the grand U.K.

So, yes. If I can remember to use these terms, then I'm sure others can too. Or, if unsure about which words to use exactly, get yourself a brit-picker. They're brilliant! I'm in constant need of them, despite my country being a dominion of the U.K. Too much American television, I tell you.
