On Thursday, my family - with Richard Rush tagging along - went to the Pirate game and Skyblast. Because it's the late night at the store, and a customer stayed a half-an-hour past closing time, we didn't get to the game until the bottom of the sixth. We must be good luck charms because the Pirates were losing (go figure) 3-1, and in that inning scored four runs. It was nice to finally be at an exciting game - especially since we won.
Skyblast, which consisted of sucky punk and much picture taking, immediately followed.
Before I show you said pictures, let me just discuss the suck that is Me First & The Gimmie Gimmies. They're a punk cover band who butchers classic songs by singing out of tune and dropping beats all over the place. The first song they played was "Stairway to Heaven". The guitarist played about three notes correctly in the intro and then proceeded to laugh about it. By the time they got to "Sweet Caroline", the crowd was booing them. The Pirate organization fired them the next day - there are three skyblasts this year, and they were contracted to play all of them.
An article in the paper had a quote from the lead singer saying something to the effect of "It just wasn't the right music for the Pittsburgh crowd." Really? I think you just kind of suck. People in any city can appreciate music that's done well. It has nothing to do with people not liking punk - it's about taking songs that everyone loves and making them unrecognizable. Their attitude gives all punk bands a bad rep. It's as if no matter who had performed, there would have been booing, and that's not the case. If a good punk cover band had performed, people would have had no problem.
I'm thinking about writing an editorial.
Anyways, enough about that: it's picture time.
I have a crush on Freddy Sanchez.
