J is for Jolie Holland, K is for the Klezmatics

Happy Monday, y'all! Well, I have a couple more videos for you. The first is from Jolie Holland, who is definitely one of my favorite singers. I love her old-fashioned, classic, yet very modern voice. She has a lazy, slinky, detached way of singing that makes everything sound so sexy. Check our her albums, "Escondida" and "Springtime Can Kill You." I believe she has a new one out too called, "The Living and the Dead."

And then here's a video for the Klezmatics. For those of you who are not familiar with this musical genre, Klezmer claims is origin story from the Russian Jewish Shtetls, and came of age in early 20th century New York tenements. There, traditional Jewish songs were infused with African rhythms, jazz modulations, and instruments from all over Europe. Sort of like bluegrass, it's one of those musical genres that's so distinctly American, and yet so foreign at the same time. The Klezmatics are probably one of the best Klezmer bands out there. Recently they released an album called "Wonder Wheel," which sets Woody Guthrie's archived lyrics to Klezmer melodies. It's FANTASTIC.

Here's a video of "Come when I call you," one of my favorite tracks. It's very Woody Guthrie AND very Klezmerry! The video isn't really that good - just a still photo of a desert. But at least you can hear the song!
