My best friend
walkingfish from college, in addition to pursuing a PHd in Women's Studies and planning a DIY July 09 wedding, has somehow managed to start
Elephunk's Trunk, her own etsy shop. A veritable fountain of crafty goodness, it seems to have flourished overnight. Almost every day she's got a new hat or choker or hair comb or coin purse up on her site. This is really no surprise, since she's been making her own badass Halloween costumes for years. An adventurous crafter, she throws herself into learning new materials that a lot of people (like me) balk at, like plaster and welded metal. On top of that, she maintains an
etsy blog and
twitter.
Many of Celeste's products, especially the hats and coin purses, are made from recycled saris and salwar camis she's brought back from her trips to the Indian subcontinent. So if you're into bright patterns in fuschia, lime, orange and burgundy, hers is the shop to patronize. She's also learned how to do classic Indian shisha mirror embroidery.
Here's one of her hats:
On her
etsy blog, Celeste updates us on the progress of her
homemade wedding dress, interviews other etsy crafters, and discusses the politics of crafting, human rights, and protecting the environment. She's a big believer in recycled materials and trash art.
