2.11.10 | Tennessee Line - Daughtry

Yoochun stepped out off the party in Changmin’s house’s ballroom into the dark empty hallway. The floor was covered in grey carpet, with glass walls on one side showing the stars and the moon above that palace while on the other side was a series of soundproof white walls that redeemed the blasting music from the party. Yoochun never liked such parties, he would prefer drinking with his closest mates than dancing crazily with strangers. He came only because Changmin dragged him into it, only because Changmin is one of his best friends.
Junsu was gone just when he needed some company, probably hiding in one of those rooms with random guy he just met. Changmin’s house is too big for it’s own sake; Yoochun even got lost walking to the bathroom! Yoochun knew Changmin was going to be so pissed if he found out Junsu was hitting on another man, but it was his fault for not confessing in the first place. Yoochun sighed and laid his back on the wall, looking out the window. At least the night view can ease his pain for a bit.

Yoochun remembered Yunho, his ex best friend and ex lover. Yunho loved parties like that; obviously, because he would come home with a bunch of new names to put on his ‘whom to have sex with’ list. For Yunho, Yoochun is the main course, but he would always be craving for ‘snacks’. He even once tried to seduce Junsu. Yoochun took all the strength he had to walk away from Yunho, his first love and his boyfriend of three years. He sometimes thought he would never fall for anyone else because Yunho had most of his heart and that part was shattered beyond repair, or at least that was what Yoochun thought.

He was drawn into his thoughts when he realized a man had been sitting on the floor not far from him. The man was beautiful, the brown hair glowed under the moonlight, and he stared blankly into the sky like Yoochun just did. He was almost like a ghost, with that pale skin of his, and Yoochun swallowed at the breathtaking view. He was curious whether or not to approach the man, but he was contemplating with his own thoughts. What if he’s not real? A part of Yoochun wanted to approach the beauty, but the other was afraid it was all hallucination and the man would vanish.

As Yoochun fought his own thoughts, the man turned his gaze to Yoochun. Yoochun gasped in surprise, but was not loud enough for the man to hear. Their eyes met for what Yoochun felt like eternity, before the man smiled and stared back to the moon. Yoochun cleared his throat nervously and walked closer to the window. The man got up and stood next to him. “Thinking about your past?” he asked with a clear soothing voice that made Yoochun shiver.

Yoochun nodded. “You too?”

The man smiled and nodded. “What the moon made us do…” the man said, “why does it always lead to something sad?”

“I guess…” Yoochun answered reluctantly, “it’s just the moon.”

“I guess so…” he replied. “Yoochun, right?”

Yoochun frowned, he didn’t remember ever meeting that man. “Yes, you are?”

“Jaejoong. We take the same Music Theory class last year.”

“Umm…” Yoochun tried to remember the man but nothing came up. “Sorry…” he finally gave up.

Jaejoong chuckled. “No problem. Everyone knows you only had eyes for Yunho.” Yoochun blushed and Jaejoong continued, “It was pretty surprising you two broke up, you know. I almost gave up back then.”

“Almost gave up?” Yoochun frowned. “On what?”

Jaejoong did not reply and continued staring at the moon. “Want to go somewhere?” he suddenly offered.

“Where?”

“I have a place in mind. Do you bring your car?” Yoochun nodded. “Let’s go, I’ll drive.” Jaejoong took Yoochun’s hand and led him to the parking lot where Yoochun parked his car. Yoochun gave him his key and Jaejoong started the black Mercedes. They rode in silence; passed Changmin’s palace’s gate, passed the building, passed the center of the city. They went on until they reached the end of the city.

“Where are we going?” Yoochun started to be concern.

“Somewhere.”

“Where is that somewhere?”

“Do you have to know everything? Can’t you just enjoy the ride?” Jaejoong teased. “Look outside your window, look into the sky. Look at those trees, the street lamps, just enjoy the show.”

Yoochun gave up and lied back on his seat, watching shadows of tall trees as the car passed by. Jaejoong was right; the view was pretty. It was almost a forest surrounding them; there were less street lamps and road signs. It was 2 in the morning and they had been driving in silence for an hour. Yoochun got bored and decided to start the conversation. “This place we’re going to, is it far?”

“Maybe,” Jaejoong chuckled.

“Maybe?” Yoochun frowned. “I don’t usually accept ‘maybes’, you know.”

“Really?” Jaejoong’s smile widened, “you will have to deal with a lot of ‘maybes’ when you’re with me.”

“You’re a guy, be consistent.”

“I like surprises and spontaneity, so…maybe, Chunnie,” Jaejoong chuckled again at Yoochun’s pout. “Like I told you, just enjoy the show.”

“You have no idea where we’re going to, are you?” Yoochun accused.

“Bingo~” Jaejoong sang in response, still not taking his eyes off the road.

“What the hell…” Yoochun groaned.

“It’s not hell, Chunnie. It’s heaven. Look all around you!” He did, more trees surrounded them by then and the forest under the moonlight was an amazing view. “Look at God’s sense of beauty. Isn’t it perfect?” Jaejoong smiled, admiration burning in his eyes. Yoochun looked at the beautiful guy next to him, looking perfect with only white long sleeved shirt and khakis. He was even more beautiful than the view, Yoochun decided.

“It is perfect indeed,” he mumbled, still watching Jae holding the steering wheel only with one hand. Another hour of drive before Jaejoong suddenly pulled over in the middle of nowhere. The two of them stared at each other; Yoochun’s demanding explanation while Jaejoong’s enjoying Yoochun’s obvious paranoia. “Why are you stopping?”

“It’s a perfect place for a nap isn’t it?” Jaejoong leaned back on his seat and closed his eyes.

“A NAP? I’m pretty sure I can find wolves around here and feed you to them!” Yoochun said, annoyed.

Jaejoong laughed, “Lean back, close your eyes. Listen to the music of the forest. This is what I do when my mind starts to wonder to places I hate.” Yoochun didn’t follow Jaejoong’s instruction and continued glaring. Jaejoong noticed and looked into him in the eye. He reached out his left hand and cupped Yoochun’s cheek. “You need to learn to let go.”

Yoochun slapped Jaejoong’s hand away harshly. “What do you know about letting go?” he shouted. Both stared at each other for a moment; only sounds of wings from shocked birds flying away were heard. “You know nothing,” Yoochun finally whispered only loud enough for Jaejoong to hear. “Don’t act as if you know everything about me.”

“Then why are you here?” Jaejoong asked, only to get a frown from Yoochun. “You could have said no to me. You could have kicked me out of this car; it’s yours anyway. You could’ve told me to stop, to turn around. Why didn’t you?” Yoochun couldn’t answer; he didn’t know why he didn’t do so either. At that moment when Jaejoong took his hand, Yoochun just felt he could trust him. “Because you wanted to escape from those memories too, right?”

Yoochun swallowed because he knew Jaejoong was right. “Now relax. I want to show you something in the morning, go to sleep and I will wake you up when its time,” Jaejoong continued. Yoochun paused but then leaned back on his seat and close his eyes. He had not realized he was so tired that sleep overcame him in less than a minute. Jaejoong watch as the man next to him relaxed, breathing’s evened. “The truth is, I do know everything about you Chunnie…” he said with a barely audible voice before he himself drifted off to sleep.

Yoochun woke up to a beautiful voice singing “For You It’s Separation, For Me It’s Waiting”, a song that he had been loving since his breakup with Yunho a couple of months ago. His car was on the move again, and although they were still surrounded by tall trees, Yoochun could guess they were heading back to town. “You’re awake,” the voice stopped singing. “I was just about to wake you up.”

Yoochun sat up and stared at Jaejoong. He looked perfect, although Yoochun was not sure Jaejoong if he had some sleep last night. The clock was showing 5:00 but the sky was still dark. “Did you get some sleep? Aren’t you tired driving, Jongie?” Yoochun couldn’t help not to be concerned.

Jaejoong smiled, “Look outside your window, Chunnie.” Yoochun did and his eyes widened in surprise. There was a purple streak on the horizon with touches of red and orange at its edge, a little above the wall of trees surrounding them. The line was in contrast to the black sky, but slowly spreading wider and swallow the darkness. It was as if someone spilled a red, orange, and purple paint on a black paper and it spreads to different directions. Yoochun watched in awe, his mind went blank with the beauty in front of him. The speeding car made the line seemed blur, the view was just like a painting.

Jaejoong didn’t pull over when Yoochun asked him to. Yoochun wanted to see more of that view, but instead Jaejoong speed up. Yoochun was irritated but decided to watch more of the view before it disappeared. They reached the outskirt of town when Jaejoong finally pulled over; the sky was all bright reddish orange by that time. “Why didn’t you pull over?” Yoochun asked, clearly annoyed.

“Why, can’t get enough of the beauty?” Jaejoong teased making Yoochun frown. “That is exactly why I showed it to you, Chunnie. The view was beautiful, but it won’t last. Something good always end faster than we hope. The sun will rise in the end, the view I showed you would be gone in an hour. What are you going to do about it?

“It’s the same with Yunho. Like the purple line on the horizon, it was not meant to last. It was over to soon, wasn’t it? You two were a perfect couple, weren’t you? Still, it didn’t last. What are you going to do about it?”

Yoochun stared at Jaejoong, unable to respond. Jaejoong had been taking words from his tongue since the night before he wasn’t able to argue. Instead, Yoochun stared at the flawless figure in front of him that glowed under the red sun.

“What I’m saying is, Yunho is just a purple line in the horizon. You still got a day to go through after that. What you need is a real sun, something that will shine throughout the day for you.”

“And when the night comes?” Yoochun said sharply, felt a bit of rebellion against Jaejoong inside him. He hated it how Jaejoong could read him like an open book.

“Didn’t you know?” Jaejoong smiled, “stars are suns, only with a much greater distance from earth therefore it looks smaller.” Yoochun pouted, he knew Jaejoong had been right all along, but he hated loosing. He hated being wrong. Suddenly Yoochun felt so full. He was mad at Jaejoong for telling him what to do, disappointed at Yunho, and he regretted being stupid. Tears dropped on the side of his face and in no time Yoochun started sobbing. He was messed up, and Yunho was the one to blame.

Jaejoong wrapped his arms around Yoochun’s neck and pulled him to his chest. “Cry all you want, but when you’re done, then you should be done with Yunho too. Or else you will have to pay my laundry fee for making my shirt wet. Okay Chunnie?” Jaejoong joked and chuckled. Yoochun couldn’t help not to chuckled along.

“I hate you…” he whispered to Jaejoong’s chest.

“Do you know that love and hate have very little difference?” Jaejoong joked again.

“Shut the fuck up!” and Jaejoong laughed again, tightening his hug on Yoochun. As soon as Yoochun calmed down, Jaejoong drove him home. Jaejoong meant to walk home when Yoochun invited him in. He shook his head, saying Yoochun need some more sleep and he would call him later. “But I still want to talk…” Yoochun pouted.

“The phone works both way,” Jaejoong smiled.

“Stay.”

Jaejoong sighed. “No. I’m going home. You need to clear you thoughts and get some sleep too.” As he turned his back to Yoochun, Yoochun grabbed his arm to stop him.

“You didn’t answer my question earlier. What did you give up on, Jae?”

“Get some sleep.”

“Gave up on what?” Yoochun insisted.

Jae took a deep breath and sighed. “On you,” Jaejoong finally answered after a couple minutes of pausing. He smiled as Yoochun’s eyes widened in surprise. “But no worries, I’m not a stalker or anything. I was on the hallway before you came; it was a coincidence. I had my eyes on you last year, but your walls were too thick I didn’t dare to even try break it down.” Yoochun stared in disbelief. That insanely beautiful guy was into him?

Yoochun opened his mouth to say something but Jaejoong’s finger stopped it. Jaejoong smiled and turned to the red sky, moving his hand to Yoochun’s shoulder. “You’ll get over Yunho one day, and when that time comes I’ll be making my move.” Jaejoong walked away and disappeared around the corner, leaving Yoochun still frozen in front of his door. The beep of Yoochun’s white Blackberry Onyx brought him back to reality.

Mjjeje: Look up!

Yoochun did, and a red balloon passed by above him with a piece of paper hanged on its end. He jumped and grabbed the paper to read it. It says, ‘let me be your sun and stars’. Yoochun laughed to himself. Who cares about the purple line? He got a giant ball of fiery gas to light up his life.
