weeky drabble challenge at
doctor_donna . Fluff through and through, because at the end of the day fluff is amusing and fun and requires less mental power - something I'm feeling a little low on.
“What? What?”
The Doctor’s puzzled tone of voice sounded rather ominous to Donna as she sat reading a book on the sofa, occasionally looking up to watch him tinkering away at the console. When the Doctor didn’t know what was going on, that was generally the time to panic. Her suspicions were confirmed when, five seconds later, the entire room was plunged into complete darkness.
His voice echoed eerily out of the gloom. “Ow!”
“What have you done?” demanded Donna, not sounding happy at all.
“Stubbed my toe! Oww!” he complained.
“No, not that you prawn! I mean what have you done to the bloody lights!”
“Oh that, right! Yeah, urm, I seem to have short-circuited the power supply; weird, I don’t know why it’s done that. There’s a backup, but it’ll take about half an hour to power up,” he explained apologetically. She heard him bumbling around in the dark. “I know it’s here somewhere…” he muttered to himself. “Ah, got it!”
A light suddenly shone from his direction, faintly illuminating the room, and Donna saw that he held a small torch in his hand.
“Tell you what,” he said, starting to cautiously make his way towards the corridor that lead to the rest of the ship. “I’ll just go and see if I can speed things up a bit by taking a look at the secondary power room -”
“Doctor?”
“Mm-hmm?” he said, turning back to look at her and inadvertently shining the torch into her eyes.
“Oi, don’t do that!” Now she had his attention, she was clearly having second thoughts about saying whatever it was that she wanted to say. She chewed her thumbnail, looking worried, and after regarding at him warily for a few seconds, she spoke.
“Don’t - don’t go,” she mumbled.
He grinned teasingly. “Donna Noble, the woman who’ll put anybody in their place, afraid of the dark?”
She glared at him, in that Donna kind of way that made him feel about six inches tall, and then jumped as the TARDIS emitted a low moaning sound. She looked around nervously, and he saw the genuine fear in her eyes, telling him he'd hit the nail right on the head. Suddenly he felt more than a little ashamed of making fun of her, especially since he knew that making this confession wasn’t easy.
“Sorry,” he said, sheepishly.
“Yeah, well, it’s not funny. I’ve never liked the dark but I knew you’d laugh at me if I told you, and then after all that stuff in the Library…” she said, miserably.
Now he felt really guilty. “You should have said something before, I’d have understood.” He thought for a second. “Sit back down on the sofa, and take this,” He handed her the torch. “And I’ll be back in two minutes, I swear.”
“How are you going to see without the torch?” she asked.
“Oh, I’ve got good eyesight. Time Lords - we’re built to see in the dark better than humans.”
The look on her face was pleading him not to leave. He squeezed her shoulder. “Two minutes. I promise.”
Exactly two minutes later, the Doctor came back into the room. “I brought you some hot chocolate,” he said, hopefully.
She sat hugging her knees with a look of defiance on her face - Donna hated anybody to think she was scared. On seeing the two steaming mugs, her face softened and she took the hot drink from him, smiling gratefully.
“Thanks, time boy,”
“Anytime.”
Sitting down, they sipped their beverages in contentment. Donna rested her head against the Doctor’s shoulder, and he suddenly felt an overwhelming rush of protectiveness towards her. He reached out and held her hand, and the darkness didn’t seem so bad after all.
