"Doctor, I’m really not sure about this."

"Oh, come on, it’ll be brilliant! It’s the best one in this whole galaxy, you’ll love it!"

"But I hate roller coasters!"

This confession was maybe a little too late, considering that they were already strapped into the car with the commencement of the ride imminent. Now that he looked at her, she did look extremely pale, paler even than usual. Her eyes were wide and worried, and he wondered if maybe she was right. But he’d wanted to go on this one for decades, and there was nobody he’d rather have by his side to enjoy the ride than Donna.

He attempted to reassure her. "It’ll be okay. You’ll see."

The brakes hissed, signalling that it was about to start. Donna sucked in her breath, now abandoning any pretence that she wasn’t completely petrified, and desperately wishing that she could get out, right now. She gripped the safety bar in front of them and whimpered. The Doctor placed his own hands over hers to try and make her feel better, but it didn’t seem to have much effect.

"I mean it you know," she said, panic evident in her voice. "I really really don’t like - aaaaargh!"

The car shot forward sickeningly fast, before twisting round and round the track repeatedly so that sky and ground alternated to fill their vision at a terrifying pace. A series of corkscrew loops and a vertical drop of a hundred metres followed and they hurtled downwards at breakneck speed (the Doctor had conveniently forgotten to mention this particular feature of the ride when he’d been trying to persuade her to get on.) This was the very best of alien theme park technology, unlike anything you could possibly experience on earth - a fact entirely lost on Donna. The Doctor knew that behind all this was a highly developed and fascinatingly complex anti-gravity system. Donna only knew that she was going to kill him later, preferably very slowly.

He marvelled at her lung capacity. So far, she’d managed to scream continuously for thirty seconds, which was no mean feat. He suspected that she wasn’t enjoying it quite as much as he was, but surely she too must think that this was amazing? The thrill, the adrenaline! The roller coaster was first and foremost a human invention, but otherworldly races had adapted it with their more advanced equipment to give an even more exhilarating experience. Humans, he mused as the car paused upside-down for a second before it all kicked off again. They do have some strange ideas but they aren’t half fun.

The car was losing velocity, and now pulled into the changeover station and came to a stop. Donna opened her eyes at last, breathing heavily and looking utterly shell-shocked. Her face had gone from white to a rather worrying shade of green.

"Whoa! That was fantastic!" exclaimed the Doctor. "Oh Donna, you have to admit it, it was brilliant, wasn’t it?"

She started to shake her head jerkily, before changing her mind halfway through and promptly throwing up over the side of the car instead.

Once she’d dealt with him appropriately, he was left to hurry after her as she stormed off muttering something about ‘bloody aliens.’ The red imprint of her hand on his cheek lasted for a good ten minutes.

End

(On a completely unrelated RL side note, I finished my exams today! Waheyy! Fic writing will no longer be a guilty activity hindered by the knowlege that I ought to be revising =P)
