No, I don't feel particularly sad about his death either. I firmly believe that JKR wrote the scene just to give us shippers some Canon evidence ;)

I'm not quite sure how I found this fic, since it's been sitting in a tab in my browser for a week or so, but boy am I glad I decided to read it before closing the tab! I didn't realize that it wasn't finished until I got to this post and there was no link to another chapter. I'll be waiting for more of this, for sure.
