How I Spent My Summer Vacation
By Lemmypie

It’s starts off like many vacations, a mad scramble to pack my suitcase too late at night and a mad dash to the airport too early in the morning.
First stop Seattle, and a long ass layover where I ran into a friend of mine…Airports, you meet the strangest people. We spent two hours chatting about everyone we know…Good times.

A puddle jumper to Vancouver get myself the rental car then off I go, let loose on the streets. Armed with a map and no real sense of direction. I headed to my friend Jimmy Roy’s apartment.

(Aside #1)Jimmy Roy is a friend of mine who is currently on tour with his band. Big Sandy and his Fly-rite boy’s (www.bigsandy.net) great band you should check them out. The night before I left I hung out with J.R. and his band mates at yet another friend’s house. I casually asked J.R. where I should stay in Vancouver. I figured I’d find a place to stay when I got there. He offered his apartment and gave me the keys right then and there. I said thank you and promised not to go through his underwear drawer.

Anyway where was I? Ah yes map and no direction.
Jimmy Roy had written out directions to his place after many drinks so I wasn’t 100% confident that the directions were accurate. I didn’t need to worry and I found the apartment. Had some fun, did some stuff. Explored, vacation type things. J.R. neighbor is in another friend from another band http://www.rockabilly.nl/artists/raycondo.htm (This is what happens when you marry a musician.) who invited me to a BBQ with “quirky Bohemians” Not to say that all Bohemians are quirky just some are well, quirkier than others.
Listened to some Gypsy Jazz then left cause I had an early start the next morning. I was going on ANOTHER adventure that was going to take me to Maple Grove, which when asked where it was at the BBQ you would have thought I’d asked where Siberia was and how long it was going to take me to get there.

The next morning I woke early expecting to travel the wilds of Canada, yeah Maple Grove was AT MOST 20 minutes away from Vancouver. I left at 7:30 am cause I had to be someplace at 10am. Needless to say but I’m saying it anyway, I was early. WAY early, pathetically early.
It all turned out well. I ate a totally rockin’ Breakfast at a market then walked to the water pulled my book of short stories and poems by Jack Kerouac out and started to read. How very “Beat” of me huh?
Even after all of that I was STILL early for my call time. Yes you read that right. My call time. I was going to be an extra one everyone’s favorite TV show (Ok not EVERYONES favorite TV show) SUPERNATURAL! GAH! Much squeeing and excitement!
Long story short, vacation, time and a friend with a casting agent, and her knowledge of my enjoyment of the pretty boys on Supernatural. All served to land me in Vancouver from Chicago to spend a day playing “extra” on the set.

As one of the first extras on set, I was sent to a tent where three people greeted me with paper work, a stamp and orders to get breakfast. (second of the day!)
Filled out paper work, ate again, got my wrist stamped and then it was waiting. Oh and waiting. A little walking around and of course more waiting.
While waiting I started chatting with Gaelle (yes her name is spelled correctly she’s FRENCH!)
We hit if off, then we hit it off with the wranglers making them laugh while the two of us just started directing the boys that were showing up to the paid extras tent. We had noticed a trend of all the unpaid extras being girls, lots and lots of girls. (Us included) Getting bored with waiting Gaelle and I wander out of the extras tent in search of the bearded lady.
We found her by the make-up trailer waiting for her beard to be glued on.
I took some pictures of her with my twin lens film camera. Chatted with a couple of clowns and make-up artists.
We then casually wandered over to the set, where we found the directors chairs used by the cast and crew. While checking the chairs out Gaelle and I met… the assistant prop director. A really nice guy who spent a large amount of time chatting with us. He introduced to some other crewmembers and told me I could use my camera as a prop, cause it looked cool. LOL! I spent time taking pictures of various Carney folk. There might have been flirting but I’m not one to say. Gaelle and I we more excited to meet people who used to work on the x-files. I noticed some banners they had from an old x-files episode about a Carnival; good to see they believe in recycling in the TV world.

By the time we made it back to the tent of extras it was time to be “wrangled” for the first scene of the day. Successfully avoiding being handed a prop Gaelle and I were placed in the center of game alley behind the man on stilts.

This is where I learned the difference between Paid extras and volunteers…Nothing, We were all wearing cool weather clothing and sweating and baking in the sun. And everybody got to look very “animated.” I must say Gaelle and I were VERY animated and well maybe a little over the top. But OMG was it fun. Clowning around with…the clowns and the guy on the stilts and making it look like we were just sooo excited to be there. One run through no cameras reset rolling “BACKROUND” which is code for start moving and pretend like your talking but don’t actually make any noise. Reset, background, reset, background. Rinse repeats until director gets something he likes. Wait different camera angle, lets mix it up a little move to the left this time not the right. Get wrangled to a different camera. Be animated!!!! “Find some shade people!” Some flirting may have occurred with the stilt walker but hey he was a funny guy and there is never any harm in flirting. Also hung out with the sound guys and the props people (still avoiding props! HA!)

Different variation of a different scene ended up with balloons (DAMN IT!) but was asked to release them into the air. HA!
The day went on in this vain for a long time; between takes we did some wandering. Saw signs that Jensen and Jared were on set, hanging out in their trailers. Ok the signs were, Gaelle and I watched them get dropped off at their trailers, but truthfully the shade of the tree we had found was more appealing at that moment. Waved hello though, cause we are nice like that. They didn’t notice.

More scenes were shot much laughter and antics and all around anarchy created by myself and Gaelle, we were nicknamed Frick and Frack but it was all good, and all done in fun. The set was totally relaxed but busy and very educational.
We did a scene were Jared was looking around suspiciously while picking up trash. We had to recycle through the scene several different ways and about a 100 times. LOOK ANIMATED!!!!
Another scene had Jensen throwing trash into a dumpster again we were the fuzzy people in the background you always see but don’t notice.
5:30pm rolled around we all ate “Lunch”. Starving by this time Gaelle and I grabbed our ham sandwiches and cokes and headed towards one of two picnic tables in the far end of the field by the road leading to the trailers. Another joined us extra; whose name I forgot but was she was very nice. Gaelle and her were chatting and I was just kind of watching the road, zoning out. An SUV drove past, I noticed Jensen was looking at the three of us sitting there chatting. I gave a small wave and he smiled huge laughed a little and nodded his head in greeting, I had totally caught him checking out three cute girls. I found it really funny. But good to know he’s a red blooded male. LOL! After lunch, a good portion of the extras went home, but before they departed there was a meet and greet with the boys. Actually they raffled off a TV set that a cute little girl won. The boys joked about the TV set playing only Supernatural. That kid was in 7th Heaven. They put her up on the TV box and posed for a picture or two with her. I thought that was very sweet of them. They took a moment to sign some autographs and whatnot. I took some pictures of them during the raffle and then had a quick discussion with them that went like this….

Jared: Dude cool camera
Me: Thanks it’s a Yashicamat from 1959
Jared: Jensen come here look at this camera!
Jensen (walking up to stand next to Jared) Man is that a film camera? That is so cool.
Me: Yeah I love taking pictures with it, speaking of can I take your picture?
Both boys: Yeah sure.
Jensen: Where did you get a camera like that?
Me: My dad. Click
Me: Thanks
Them: No Problem, cool camera.
Then Jensen was called off to earn his paycheck and Jared went off to sign autographs.

A wrangler by the name of L.A. told Gaelle and I that our day was over but we could stay if we wanted. Many of the other extras stayed as well.

(Aside #2) I had earlier in the day talked Gaelle into calling in to her work and taking the day off, she came up with a really great heat stroke excuse and the way she pulled it off talking to her boss should earn her a Emmy nomination.

Lunch over and fewer extras, we were once again called to set. Things seemed to move faster at this point. Mostly because I think it was much cooler and they were losing light. We ended up playing ski ball with a group of extras again as background for a scene where Jared runs out the back of the fun house looking scared. At one point after the 6th take Jared comes running out screaming like a girl, made everyone jump then crack up. He came around back to his mark which was right next to the ski ball and waiting for a the action call.
We were all so impressed with the scream that he needed to be complimented on it, so I spoke up. Told him that was the BEST girlie scream I’d ever heard, then started to applaud everyone around us started clapping as well he took a bow and continued to joke around with all of us. The boy LOVES an audience. All the extras and him were throwing jokes around and whatnot. Very relaxed until the director yelled ACTION! Then it was all business, acting like your playing ski ball is hard damn it!

Like I said things moved faster this time around we’d finish one scene be told to go sit but before we could, they would call us back. Ready for the shot. Got to be part of a scene with Jensen talking to a blind man, our direction was…Get as close to the actor (Jensen) as we could. It’s supposed to be a very crowded area. The sound guy (Christian) looked at me and said Yeah get close but don’t touch his ass. How did he know what I was thinking? Was I really that easy to read? Yes, I was. But it was more like I wanted to run my fingers through his hair. It just looked so soft. Anyway. More background “acting” The damn clowns got a hold of water guns and the guy with the stilts found it fun to soak the crap out of Gaelle and I when we walked by. We walked by at least 8 times…

Another scene that seemed pivotal to the plot. A little girl seeing some clown and the boys reacting to what she says. It took forever and ended up being shot 2 or three different ways. But this is where Gaelle and I got our “Big Break” LOL! Just after the girl said he “Look mama a clown” line we crossed right in front of where she and her “mom” were looking. The director yells cut, then the assistant director yells “Where are the two girls that crossed the road.” He sounded annoyed we got scared even though we were told to cross the road (sounds like a bad joke) I said in my “shy” way. “He told us to cross there.” Meaning the director. Totally one of those I didn’t do it moment. Director, extras, the boys started laughing, yeah I felt stupid but laughed as well. Verbal vomit is always funny.
He assured me we didn’t have our heads up out Asses; he just wanted us to cross on the other side and at a certain time. Gaelle got all nervous it was cute. Then we spent twenty minutes walking past the kid and THE BOYS, right in front of the cameras.

(Aside #3) Just in case you were wondering, which I’m sure you really aren’t. These are some things I noticed while gawking…. The crew seemed to always call them “THE BOYS” which cracked me up.
Both boys are tall. Their cell phones they use for the show actually work. I spotted both of them actually talking on their phones more than once between takes. They do entertain each other. There was much playful shoving and once during a scene where the boys are to stalk off. Jensen jumped on Jared’s back for a piggyback ride. Of course both boys were as sweet as apple pie. The whole set is totally relaxed. Everyone is really laid back. Except for the Director of Photography, he seemed stressed. LOL! I was afraid of him.

The wrap up…There was another extras cut at about 9:30 pm again we made the cut (YEAH!) did a scene milling around a ride, by this time it was getting dark and I know I was exhausted, but I was determined to stick it out.
We were sent back to holding and waited around for about 15 minutes when plans suddenly changed and the 30 extras that were left were told we were done for the day. That was about 11pm.
We said out goodbyes to everyone we met. Chatted with some, exchanged emails and all that good stuff.
All said it done it was a great experience that will stay with me, for a long time
(Aside #4) I forgot to mention the rides yes this is an episode revolving around a fair so there were rides. I was pretty convinced that my whole day was going to be spent riding the tilt-a -hurl. I avoided all rides. A few unfortunate souls weren’t so lucky. I think 4 different kids tossed their cookies on various rides…. You’d hear it on the walkie-talkies….”Hold up! A kid puked on a ride.” Then we’d have to wait till the kid was retrieved and the ride were wiped down. Good Times Good Times.
I gave Gaelle a ride back to the city, it was the least I could do…After all she took 4 buses to the shoot and I made her miss work. LOL!
I got back to J.R’s apartment by 11:30 an exhausted mess. But my day wasn’t over…Not by a long shot. It just so happens that my good friend “Big Pink” happened to be in Vancouver at the very same time as me. I gave her a call hoping just to talk to here and say, “I’m sorry we couldn’t hang out.” But Big Pink was up and dressed so we threw caution to the wind….She drove to “The drive” to come and hang out with me. Really I think she came to make fun of the exhausted mess that was I. But that’s ok cause after months of emailing and chatting it was so great to finally meet her in person. It was like we’ve known each other for years. We went in search of food, but at 12:30 there really wasn’t much opened. We hit pay dirt at a pizza joint; where I got a slice devoured it then promptly went into food coma. Poor Pink practically had to drag me back to the apartment. LOL!

I ending the night being asked the questions what did I like better Batta Bing or Botta Bam…. I was the tiebreaker…. Pink I went with you.

The next day I flew home, scared my fellow passengers by chuckling to myself from time to time, thinking about what I had just done.
There you have it in a really large nutshell.

There were numerous other little things that happed here and there that day. And truthfully the boys were great and it was cool to be there, but they are just two guys doing a job. I had my moments where I would just crack up because I couldn’t believe I was there doing this and meeting all those great people and really that what was the most exciting for me. I’m looking forward to seeing the episode and I’m still convinced that all your going to see for my several hours out in the hot sun is the back heel of my Converse in one millisecond of film, but that’s ok it was all worth it for the experience and for a chance to meet Gaelle who I spent the whole day laughing with.

I promise if my pictures turn out I’ll post them, but because I used my film camera I had to take them to get processed and because they are medium format (not 35mm) I had to take them to the pro-shop. They don’t do the one hour thang. LOL!
Hope it made you laugh and cry. I hope it’s better than Cats.
