Brideshead Revisited

...is among the pretty shiny things I have been enjoying lately. =D  It is a 1945 British novel, and a 1981 BBC mini-series with Jeremy Irons.  Two of my friends had read the novel, and convinced me to start watching the BBC series with them.  It is love. <3

We're only halfway through the series and I haven't read the novel yet (although I certainly plan to).  But the story contains...
    -Two young college men whose close relationship suggests homosexuality
    -...One of whom is eccentric in a very cute way and carries a teddy bear
    -Themes of youth and innocence on the cusp of adulthood
    -Nostalgia for times past
    -British aristocracy in the 20th century
    -Religion (specifically Catholicism) and Atheism
    -Family drama

A winning combination of stuff, as far as I'm concerned. :D  The characters are very real and likable too.  (Charles Ryder being an atheist, presumably bisexual, dropping out of University to go to art school = instant like.)  It's saddening that the story descends into such drama and angst later on, but it's very real and captivating.  I suppose it is how things ought to happen in these types of stories, because fluffy as the beginning was, it couldn't have lasted forever.

Apparently there is also a mainstream movie release of Brideshead scheduled for this summer, but my friends and I think it looks icky. D:  Why mess with perfection?

Also: Attempted playing D&D with these friends.  My first time.  Yes, our Friday night was a literary BBC series, then Roleplaying.  Apparently we run the gamut of geekiness. XD;
