Oh dear lord Pokemon.
I've been (perhaps fatally) bitten by the Pokemon bug. The new X & Y versions release tomorrow for the 3DS. Problem is, I don't have a 3DS. I don't play games very much at all anymore. Heck, I hardly play games (except for Words With Friends) on my phone. BUT...POKEMON.
Now, I'm not a die-hard fan by any means, but I've at least partially played a game from every generation, from the beginning right up until now. (Well, Black 2 and White 2 don't count.) I was captivated by the Blue Version at age 11. Along with many others of my generation, I just feel like Pokemon has been fused into my blood and it's always going to be there. When I see new designs, I get excited. Cute designs? Super excited. A new Eevee evolution? Super duper excited.
Now, is a 3DS worth $200? (I'd go for the XL size if I'm going to do it.) Objectively speaking, surely not. I played with one at Best Buy and noticed right away that the screen resolution is, well, pathetic, compared to the "grown-up" devices I'm now accustomed to, and even compared to the screen on my husband's PS Vita. The 3D effect is rather annoying, and I'd probably keep it turned off most of the time.
Annoyance Factor #2 is that the following maxim applies here: Japan gets the cutest best shit and everyone else gets the lowest common denominator.
Eevee? Japan only.
Artsy, most beautiful of ALL beautiful game consoles I've EVER seen? Japan. (You have NO idea how much my soul cries out for this one. This would be an Insta-sell, if it were available in my market. Nintendo...you fools.)
For some reason, unlike the original DS, the 3DS is region-locked. Even while the only game anyone cares about (Pokemon) gets a worldwide simultaneous release. Thank you for making sense, Nintendo.
Generic "Special Edition" available in the U.S. market:
Meh. They're OK. I thought the blue one was kind of cool until I saw the Japanese offerings. They're just so...I don't know...boyish-looking. I'm not surprised, but...Is it a crime to want something pretty? T_T

*Ahem* Well, I've learned one thing so far. Sometimes, I am incredibly girly. (It's kind of interesting, really. My response to the cute accessories is immediate and powerful. Based on my gut, I have the hardest time imagining WHY anyone would prefer the masculine-looking legendary Pokemon on bold colors to PINK EEVEE EVOLUTION WITH BUNNY EARS AND BOW...Even though I know there are a lot of people, especially men, who would have the exact opposite response.) So yeah, keep on doing your thing, X chromosome 9_9 ...As long as game accessories remain non-region-locked. Because only Japan values girly girl gamers, apparently. Heh.
Bottom line: I'm super tempted to spring for a 3DS and the new Pokemon game (and at least one pretty accessory). Do I have the money? No. Could I charge it? Yes, but it's not advisable for me right now. Do I care? Hmmm...I've been obsessing constantly for over 24 hours about this thing, so I guess that says something, right?
Argh. I don't want to want it. But I do. So badly. -_-
