So, I've seen Toy Story 3 twice already and it will NOT get OUT OF my head. Far above and beyond my expectations, it was as close to a perfect film as I have seen in a long, long time, if not ever. I kid you not. The previews may show the silliest parts, but we all know that for some reason Pixar films are always riddled with this little problem. The first two Toy Story movies may have been merely enjoyable and (quite) clever, and so I made the mistake going in with lowered expectations. But I was blown away.
A few things I need to say (no spoilers here):
-The level of sophistication is far beyond the other Toy Story films. Just....wow. Pixar just gets better and better at making "films made for adults that are appropriate for children" (as I've heard their work described before). The stuff I got out of it would've just gone "whoosh" over my head when I was a kid. It turns out that I am extremely pleased with the 11-year gap between films 2 and 3.
-I feel the need to write (an) essay(s) about my interpretation of the film. The metaphors are so rich to me, I can't stop untangling them in my head. This effort is hopefully forthcoming.
-I can tell that Pixar puts so much care into every single moment. The facial expressions at times left me aghast.
-Character development is superb in this installment. I think it's partially because it's preceded by 2 other movies and the universe is now expansive enough to allow for such development. But it was also just... I dunno... I am suddenly moved to care about these characters more than I ever have before. The movie did something right, that clicked with me.
-I am therefore getting a little obsessive and am on the verge of trying to find out if there is any fandom going on for Toy Story. Sounds silly, I know.
-I am hard and fast becoming a "shipper" for Buzz & Jessie. #^^# I was like, "Whuhhh...?" when it came over me. It's just....ah....You have to see it! (I don't think this is a spoiler btw.... They were semi coupled off at the end of TS2. And you may have already seen
this TV spot. <-- Uhh in my defense, there's more to it than just this though.)
~~
Bottom Line: See it with your literary analysis and life experience glasses. The 3D glasses aren't really necessary. It's truly a story-driven film, so you're not missing much if you stay off the 3D bandwagon. I've seen both versions, so take it from me. ;) If you like animation or characters or thinking/feeling about our purpose and mortality, I think you should see it. Pixar just keeps pushing the envelope, and why are they the only ones, I'd like to know?
((Time now to go dancing around the room with little hearts above my head and tears in my eyes.))
