My favourite allergy-inducing beastie has been rapturous about having Rain and I back home. I'd had a doctor's appointment on Friday for a general check-in, and after one look at my bleary puffy eyes, the Doc prescribed me a month of allergy meds. I love my doctor. (plus she repeatedly pounded into my head that I did a good/noble thing helping out ( Read more... )

hullo,
I came across your LJ a little while ago, I'm currently studing at your old uni (falmouth college of arts) on the illustration course, I'm in my final year and we are off to New York soon and I was wondering if there was any advice you could impart to me on meeting people in the industry and what to do and not to do when leaving uni.
ps love the web site.

Recs for NY: Have fun, there's no reason to freak out about it. They're very interested in seeing the UK style, they're not going to outright blow you off. Keep any cards you get from them, and write them back. In addition to the FCA cards (I'm assuming that traditions been kept), take ones of your own. I really wish I'd done that. Take the stuff -you- love, not just the stuff the tutors punch for, as your love for the work really shows. I brought a slew of stuff I was so-so on but was good, and yet the pieces that I really cared for were the ones that got the comments. If you have a website, that's extra good. The industry is getting more and more geared that way. (and I'd love to take a peek!) If you do have a site, get one of those keychain memory sticks and throw it on there. Instant portfolio attachable to any computer! Also, grab the various US magazines. They're good for comparing the UK/US styles as well as contacts. The Village Voice is neat.

And that's all I can think of right this minute. Got to get back to the comic I'm working on now (four pages a day. Utterly mad.) I'll friend you, okay?

Good luck!

Hey cheers for all that, to be honest I have been freaking out abit about NY, mostly due to Alan Male making it seem like the be all and all of our illustration lives, I do have a website but like yours it needs updating as I've done so much more work since then. take a look and let me know what you think of my stuff www.juanillustration.co.uk
The FCA radition has gone (they gt rid of it last year) now the whole year produces a promotional book which gives each student a double page spread lat years theam was trivia this year we got stuck with Quotation, where we find a quote and illustrate it.
I like the card thing more.
oh and its called University College Falmouth now, not Falmouth college of arts, they changed the name half way through my second year, which added no end of confusion when applieng for new loans and grants etc.. this year.
once again thank you very much for the advise, I will also friend you too,
bye for now
