Summary: Someone's in the Nursery
There was someone in the nursery.
Palau shook herself awake and got out of bed, reaching for the pitchfork she was given as a wedding present from Joss' wife, Marina, that was hidden under the bed. Marina said it was for her protection and she'd laughed initially, but events after the wedding had convinced her that having some kind of protection close at hand was a good idea.
There was someone in the nursery. Her children were in the nursery.
Her protective instincts took over. Pitchfork in hand, she crept to the door of the nursery, and listened. Pakistan wasn't crying and her newborn was also silent. They could be sleeping and not the alternative. Slowly turning the doorknob, she pushed the door open a crack and peered in.
Pakistan was in their crib but she could see the crib holding her newborn. She started to push the door in further when whoever was in the nursery with her children started singing.
"Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high."
The voice was definitely masculine and she knew who it was. The light breathy tenor was as familiar to her as her own alto. All of her fears drained out of her as she realized her children were safe. Leaning the pitchfork against the wall next to the door, she opened it the rest of the way.
The man holding her newborn looked up at her and smiled but didn't stop singing. She smiled back in return and just remained in the doorway watching him with his child. When he finished the song, he placed the baby back in its crib and ran a hand over the sleeping form.
"The keiki is beautiful, ko aloha."
She nodded. "Yeah, she is."
