1. When does Flynn know Rapunzel's name?
It's very possible I've been too bedazzled by the prettiness of Tangled to be cognizant of what's happening on the screen or register what anyone's saying. As far as I can tell, she never tells him. Does he suddenly "know" her name when he realizes "who" she is?
"Rapunzel, let down your hair!"
I prefer "Blondie."
EDIT: Wow. It only took around 7 or 8 viewings (?) until I finally got that she tells him her name while he's tied up in her chair. (Frack, it is so weird to be in a house with little ones who prefer to watch things on loop and none of the adults care that the same thing's been playing for 10 hours straight)
EDIT 2: It's fricken hilarious listening to my mom narrate and translate the movie to my aunt. It's like an extremely simplified list of childish "obvious" observations in Khmer. "See, the horse is like a dog." "The old lady stole the baby for herself. The real parents put the light in the sky for their missing baby and now their baby sees them like she's supposed to." "Now he's going to climb her hair." "When the bigger guy jumps on the cart, the other guy goes flying and the horse was waiting for him." "The horse is running."
2. When does Flynn realize she's the princess? Or does he ever?
Is it when the twins tell him they're after the girl? But they want her for her hair, they don't even know who she is. Is it when they mention an old lady and he realizes it fits the story of the lost princess being stolen in the night by a hag? Or is he only worried because he knows Rapunzel's been a prisoner in her tower? Is it possible he never actually knows she's the princess until sometime after she saves his life? Was anyone besides Mother Gothel aware of the flower's power being transferred to the baby?
- Mother Gothel falling from the tower reminded me of Gandolf falling in Moira. XD
- The level of creepiness of Mother Gothel reminds me of Coraline's "Other Mother" - (particularly when Gothel calls her "Flower," CHILLS!)
- Rapunzel's surprisingly well-adjusted after losing the only other person in her world for 18 years (what happened to Stockholm Syndrome?)
- I really like that neither character ever actually says "I love you" -- it's refreshing to let the obvious remain unspoken (And furthermore, it's interesting that what is unspoken is true, but what is said is a lie -- Mother Gothel and Rapunzel have a ritual of telling one another how much they love each other)
- I find it really interesting that Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi (oops, AND Donna Murphy!) are both the speaking voices AND the singing voices of their characters. How many Disney characters has this been the case? Rare enough that the only other character off the top of my head would be Tia Carrere in Lilo and Stitch.
- Rapunzel as The Tempest's Miranda, sheltered and with limited human contact, she falls in love with the first man she sees. Is Rapunzel also doomed to this fate? Could the first person besides her mother she sets eyes on be a Caliban-like figure and would she still have fallen in love? I'm not entirely convinced it had to be Flynn (although I'm glad it was).
