Leighton's taste in men is "opposite to Blair's." :P Some new interviews!

Thank you to you-define-beauty for translating Leighton's cover story from Germany's JOY magazine.

Which kind of guy is she attracted to in her private life?
Opposite to Blair, guys who play games turn me off. Chuck is unpredictable and obsessed with power - and even if he has a good heart, I could never be with someone I can’t trust a 100 percent.

Which character trades are most important to you, if it comes to your choice in men?
He should be a little entertainer (laughs). I’m actually really shy. When i enter a group of people, i’d rather be silent and observe. I think this character trade is my biggest weakness, that’s why i like it if a guy is funny and outgoing.

Is it hard for you to work with new people?
I need some time to get used to it, but then nothing can stop me. At the “Gossip Girl” set, we’re a close team, but whenever i’m doing movies, i’m working with a whole new crew. At last I was working in Boston with Adam Sandler for the comedy “That’s My Boy” - i’ve never experience an athmosphere like that. Everyone was incredibly nice, i felt like home immediately.

At the end of the third Season of “Gossip Girl”, Blair and Serena go to Paris and she meets an attractive french guy. Did you ever meet someone special on a vacation?
No, I’m not one for a fast affair, where you already know it’s not gonna last. I like to meet new people, while traveling, but i’m not lookinmg for a lover. A few years ago i’ve been traveleing through Europe, and spent some time in Paris too, it was great.

What did you do in Paris to keep you busy?
I really liked spending some time alone and i got to know more about the ‘savoir-vivre’. Whenever i’m in a different country, i get to know new sides of me. I ate macaroons, enjoyed Café au Lait and just walked through the streets of Paris. I took hundrets of photos, visitied various art exhibitions, listened to music at the Seine and wrote a diary.

Do you still write a diary?
Yes - it’s something i’m doing since i was a teenager. I know it sounds very sensitive and girly, but it helped me to come to terms with my experiences. Those books are great memories! Today, i think it’s really amusing to read old entries and to remember the problems in my youth. Whenever something did not go according to my plan, my world fell apart. My worst phase was at the age of 17. It was a strange time: you’re not a child anymore, you feel very mature, but nobody takes you serious.

Do you have a boyfriend at the moment?
No, but there was this guy at my highschool, i used to adore. But he was really mean and it hurt a lot, because I wanted him to fall in love with me too. Whenever i’m interested in someone now, who does not feel the same way about me, i don’t waste my time, i’ll move on and look for someone else (laughs).

How do you seduce a guy?
I’ll go with a nice scent. My cousin suggested i’d spray the room with parfume and walk right through it. But that’s not enough for me. I wear my parfume on my throat, my neck and my wrists -currently “Lovestruck” by Vera Wang, and not just because i’m the face of the campaign! (laughs)

What do you like to do in your free time?
I’ve never been good at making plans, i’d rather just go with whatever my friends planned - i’m open for everything. I like to go out, but not really visiting ‘Hot Spots’, I’d rather visit really casual stores. I also love playing billiard on a reular basis, or enjoy relxaing dinner dates.

What do you like to wear on such an evening?
High heels! Be honest: every woman looks better with heels. It may not be the most comfortable version, but I’m not really into flat shoes. Either, i wear high heels or really sporty shoes like Sneakers or Converse, but nothing in between.

Who is your fashion icon?
I love the looks of the classic hollywood-beauties like Audrey Hepburn - i have to portray her for dream sequences in “Gossip Girl”, i really enjoy that a lot. I’m also a huge fan of Chloe Sevigny, her style is cool and egdy - that woman tries everything!

Care to share your styling tips?
I like to experiment with make-up, i love to accentuate my lips, or focus on smokey eyes. In my freetime i’m way too lazy to apply much make up. Then i’ll just go with red lipstick and sunglasses - it’s the easiest way to get a glamorous finish in less than two minutes!

Ever since your huge success on “Gossip Girl” you’re living life in the fast lane. What about the luxury do you like best?
I travel a lot and spend a lot of time in the plane. So whenever i get a private first-class seat that i can turn into a bed, in which i can sleep perfectly and get my slippers, i’m happy like a little child.

Would you still fly economy class?
I often have to travel with planes where there is no first class - for example my hometown Forth Worth, Texas. I have no problem with that. I don’t have a problem with motels either, quite the opposite: I love roadtrips and camping! All i need is a tent to sleep in (laughs).

The lovely deuxcoeurs, who wrote Leighton's cover story for ELLE Indonesia, sent me the English translation. Basically a compilation of everything we love about the girl. ♥♥ Leighton has some of the most talented fans and people on her side :)

TURN AROUND, BRIGHT EYES

Maybe it’s her ridiculously irresistible turn as Blair Waldorf in the Gossip Girl series, but you have to admit there’s something incredibly alluring about Leighton Meester.

Picture this scene: tiny Blair Waldorf, looking very much like a polished porcelain doll, smiles slightly with a glint in her eyes as she says calmly: “Haven’t you heard? I’m the crazy bitch around here.” If you’re a regular watcher of Gossip Girl, the sensational drama series about the lives and loves of privileged young adults in Upper East Side, New York, then that quote just now might have been one of your favourite things about Blair. Impeccable fashion sense aside, the character’s deliciously bitchy persona (usually used as a front to hide her insecurities about many things, most of the time related to her best friend, Serena van der Woodsen) is actually easier to relate to for some people, compared to Serena (played by Blake Lively), who is more of a free-spirit. Enter Leighton Meester, who has turned Blair’s spoiled and manipulative side and elevated her into a whole new dimension, so that the Queen B becomes decidedly more interesting and lovable. “I feel like I only have about 1% in common with the character I’m playing,” she says at one point. “Blair is really manipulative and selfish, you know, and on a level that’s a bit much. You have to find a common ground with this character, otherwise you might end up disliking her.” Even so, Meester claims to be fond of the role she’s been playing for the last five years now, and adds that she only wants the best for Blair when the inevitable series finale happens. “I think she’s essentially a good person, her heart is in the right place, and she also has a very good sense of who she is,” says Meester. “I admire those traits in her.”

THE GOOD GIRL
It would be very tempting for me to just keep comparing Meester and her alter ego, but that would be an easy job. The fact is, digging out the personal life of one Leighton Marissa Meester proves to be somewhat of a challenge. This doesn’t mean that there’s nothing that can be said about her (as a rising young actress, obviously there’s been a number of negative rumours about her - we’ll get to that later), but at the same time, Meester is also not one of those celebrities that makes the front page daily. Up until now, she hasn’t really been in the spotlight, if you know what I mean, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Looking back, one of the times that Meester received wide attention about something else other than her burgeoning career, it was centered on the controversy surrounding her birth. Born on April 9, 1986, it was generally known that while pregnant with Meester, her mother was serving time in prison in Texas. “I was born in a hospital, not in prison,” she explains, looking almost bored about having to do so. Soon after she was born, her mum went back to prison to complete her sentence and Meester was raised by her grandmother. “My mum and dad went through a lot of complicated things before I was born and I can’t judge them for that. They are both good people.” Then, as if to emphasize how silly this all is, she rolls her eyes and says, “Look, I could’ve turned out a lot worse.”

This was true, because ever since she was little, Meester has found a passion in acting. “I was watching a lot of TV when I was a kid, and then it just clicked, ‘hey, this is called acting!’” she says excitedly. Not one to waste time, she then went on to take part in community plays at 9 years old, until one day she finally met her manager, who encouraged her to move to New York and pursue a career as an actress. Since 1999, Meester has adorned her resume by getting small parts in various TV series, such as Law & Order, 24, Veronica Mars, House M.D., CSI: Miami, and Entourage, where she plays Justine Chapin, Adrien Grenier’s love interest. It was then in 2007, that she went for an audition for Gossip Girl and landed the role of Blair. The great thing is, it wasn’t about sheer luck: the producers had an eye on her for quite some time. “She has this great combination of intelligence, wit, and strength, but there’s also this mischievous quality about her,” says Stephanie Savage, executive producer and writer on the show. “She also tells it like it is and doesn’t like nonsense, and unlike Blair, she’s nonjudgmental.” Meester’s effort to get the role was not halfway: she had her natural blonde hair coloured into brown. “That was quite impulsive, especially since at the time, I wasn’t even sure I would get the part. But I’m glad I did it.”

As previously said at the beginning, Gossip Girl’s instant success suddenly makes everyone want to know infinitely more about her, but most of the time to no avail. This might be because Meester is notoriously protective about her family and loved ones. “I don’t want any of the additional stuff that comes with this job (she means, fame),” she sighs. “I’m doing everything I can to keep my job and my private life apart. It feels like my friends and I are part of a cult, because we would act all ‘exclusively’ and feel weird when anyone else wants to join us,” she says with a laugh. “I have never been ‘crazy’. Honestly, all I do is work! I don’t think there’s much material for the paparazzi.” With the passing of time, aside from the sex scandal (she vehemently denies that it was her in the video), this claim proves to be true.

ALL THAT GLITTERS
As part of a show whose appeal mostly lies in the clothes, shoes and accessories worn by its characters, it was no wonder that Meester would also be scrutinized for her style. For her personally, the love of fashion blossomed early. “I started playing Barbie, and I enjoyed dressing her up. I also loved watching my mother when she was getting ready and putting her makeup on to go out. My mother is my style icon!” Aside from her mother, Meester also admires Cate Blanchett and Audrey Hepburn. “Cate Blanchett has an interesting way to interpret many things but remains youthful. She still loves to experiment, but she’s still very much a woman,” she says. “As for Audrey Hepburn, I just love her. Whatever she wears, on and off screen, becomes iconic - her hair, makeup, tiara, dress, even her body becomes a trend of some sort!” In everyday life, Meester herself feels more comfortable wearing t-shirts, jeans, complete with reading glasses. What’s more, she now enjoys going out makeup-free these days. “It’s not false modesty,” she says, almost to defend herself. “I’ve been through phases where I didn’t feel comfortable with myself. As a result, I always put on too many products to conceal the parts I didn’t like. Now it’s different, I feel healthier and more beautiful without makeup.” The way her natural beauty shines through, probably also has something to do with her relaxed countenance, something that her co-stars on Gossip Girl, Ed Westwick and Chace Crawford, agree on. “Leighton is definitely a guy’s girl,” confirms Crawford. “Yes, and believe me, she eats a lot,” adds Westwick. “She can wolf down two sandwiches and still have the tiniest figure!”
It was also this that attracted the attention of designer and perfumer Vera Wang. After admitting that she’s impressed by Meester, she chooses her to be the face of her new fragrance, Lovestruck. The feeling is mutual, as Meester compliments Wang by describing the fragrance as: ‘a sparkling floral scent, which transpires as flirty, feminine, friendly but also edgy. It’s perfect for anyone who’s in love. I’m love struck by Lovestruck!”

Lucky for her, aside from acting and fashion, Meester also found her niche in music. You might remember Good Girls Go Bad, Meester’s collaboration with Cobra Starship, which became a surprise hit during summer 2009. A few months before that, Meester had released her first album, which included Somebody to Love, her duet with Robin Thicke. “Music is the most personal thing I’ve ever done. Not many people can see this side of me, and it’s rather difficult for me to show it during interviews. Plus, I also get to practice my skills in songwriting, which I’d done since I was 16.” Her easy going nature comes back in full force when she was asked about the inspiration behind Somebody to Love. “I travel a lot and meet so many people, but not a lot sticks to mind. It’s difficult to differentiate between love and sex,” she explains. “So, in a way, maybe this song is actually about my effort to get some!” she laughs.

THE ROAD AHEAD
Lucky again for her, often what becomes her passion can all be merged together. For instance, in the movie Country Strong (2010). She starred with Tim McGraw, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Garrett Hedlund. In this film, she had the opportunity to play a part that’s very different from Blair and also sang a few songs included in the soundtrack. After this, she continued by taking a part in The Roommate (2011) and Monte Carlo (2011). Recently, Meester has announced that she won’t reprise her role as Blair after her contract finishes this year, but feels optimistic about the future. “I don’t know what I’ll do,” she says. “More acting and singing. I’d like to keep writing songs and perform on stage. I’d like to travel more, go to school, do some gardening, cooking - anything that I couldn’t have done more freely before.” But before that, she does have a few exciting projects lined up for her in the next few years, including The Oranges with Hugh Laurie and That’s My Boy with Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg and Milo Ventimiglia. Whatever happens next, you can rest assured of one thing: it looks like Meester won’t be changing into a super diva any time soon. She appears to still be down-to-earth and wanting to enjoy life as much as she possibly can. Want some proof? When asked about the guilty pleasures in her life, she smiles mischievously and says, “You know? I’m trying to think about the things that would make me embarrassed. But damn, I don’t really have any shame.” With a confession like this, it’s a no-brainer: you too, would have a girl crush on her. Especially with those Bambi eyes!
