(If you didn't see the subject line and replace "discussion" with "hammer," then I am not-so-secretly judging you ;)
So, I think everyone has little things that are their personal pet peeves in fandom. Shipper wars, the term "quivering member," inability to Britpick, et cetera. We're only human, you know. And today, I want to talk about mine (and get your thoughts, obviously!).
Portmanteaus.
*SHUDDERS* OMG. I hate them so, so much! They give me a nervous tic. Granted, there are a few that are widely used in fandom that I'm somewhat okay with (Dramione being the main example), but we have reached a point where it has gone wayyyyyyy too far.
Specifically, let's look at what inspired this post.
hpfanficfanpoll. First off, let me say that I think this is a great comm. The mods take on a lot of work, and I don't envy them for that. But holy Batman, the PORTMANTEAUS. Snermione? HARRON? What the heck is that? And let's be real -- "Scorose" sounds like a venereal disease.
Look, I get that the use of some shipper names is going to be popular -- the Drarry and Dramione people are so populous, those names aren't going away. BUT I DRAW THE LINE at some of these. The first time someone told me Draco and Ginny was called "Drinny," I laughed in their face. I have been in the D/G shippers for over ten years, you young whippersnapper, and not a single one of us refers to D/G as such.
If anything, they're called Fire and Ice.
Because real talk. If you have to use a
key so people know what pairing you're referring to, you probably shouldn't be trying to use a shipper name in the first place.
I'm among friends here, y'all. And I think you all know me well enough to know that I am not making fun of people who choose to use such names for their OTPs. I'm just saying that seeing them gives me a nervous tic.
What do y'all think? (I've opened this up to non f-locked, so if you're just cruising journals, welcome!)
