CHARACTER INFO
Character Name: Kristoph Gavin
Canon: Ace Attorney
Point taken from canon: After the events of Ace Attorney: Apollo Justice, after his second sentencing.
Age: 32
Gender: Male

Appearance: Tall and lean, Kristoph is always immaculately dressed and groomed. He generally wears a blue three-piece suit with white dress shoes and a pink/purple tie. His blond hair frames around his usually placidly smiling face, with the longer parts spiraling together and draped to his collar over his left shoulder. Kristoph is also never seen without a pair of thin-framed, oval glasses over his blue-gray eyes. See [here], though I should note that his defense attorney's badge is completely absent in the canon point I am taking him from. He also has a scar running across the top of his right hand.

Background: Wiki link!

Personality: Kristoph is a man of two faces.

Outwardly, he is calm, polite, and the perfect gentleman. He is articulate and kind, and smiles quite freely. He can be lightly teasing and possesses a bit of wit, though his jokes are rarely anything but polite. It's quite hard not to like him, honestly. He might come off as a bit vain and a perfectionist, but those would be about his only apparent weaknesses. Otherwise, he is composed even in the most odd of situations, and keeps a level head about him. He has a penchant for launching off on a bit of purple prose, as we see in the first case, but this doesn't happen often. He likes to surround himself with expensive, elegant things, and takes great care in his appearance- the fact that he uses a certain brand of expensive, limited-run, clear nail polish becomes a plot point in the game. He is well-known for being collected and level-headed even at the worst of times, earning him the moniker "The Coolest Defense in the West", and it takes much to get anything but a polite smile from him.

The reality is far from the show he puts on. Inwardly, Kristoph is described as a "devil" by Vera Misham, and he certainly lives up to it. He is manipulative, calculating, and in his own warped sense of reality puts himself above everyone and everything else. He believes he is perfect, and any slight to that makes his persona crumble. Kristoph is not above using even his own brother as a tool of revenge- a brother that admired and loved him. Kristoph used him as if he were a random stranger, and never showed any remorse for it. He desires control of everything- his life, the people around him, and when he looses his control, Kristoph sheds the calm persona and quickly becomes a callous, twitching monster. He shows his true colors rarely, and only when he is slighted and has lost control, but they are there.

This wouldn't be that bad, if it weren't compounded by the rage he carries at his core. Kristoph, though he puts on a show of being logical, can be deeply ruled by his emotions, and when he snaps, he lashes out at those that have slighted him. He is not above giving into his own paranoia, and will pretty much stalk everyone involved with an incident until he is able to get his revenge. And it's only right, after all, since he considers his revenge to only be an act of justice- as he considers himself to be the law. He also shows no remorse at his actions, even when it is clear that he has hurt those that are "close" to him. Despite being controlled and generally rational, he sometimes makes stupid mistakes- such as giving Vera Misham a bottle of rare nail polish that he is known to use, or letting slip that he knew the colors of the cards in the first case of the game. Kristoph is also very, very set in his ways and actively resists change. He denies his emotions, openly chastising his brother for letting his emotions rule him.

Those who have slighted Kristoph, he will hunt mercilessly. I would like to say that he is methodical, but once Shadi Enigmar, who slighted him by dismissing him from a case, appeared again, Kristoph bludgeoned him to death the same night. This, as the lashing out mentioned above, goes to show how he can act rashly and impulsively when confronted by his own narcissistic rage. This also applies to those that might damage his reputation, and Kristoph is shown in canon not being above poisoning a little girl to keep her silent about the forgery that could have had him disbarred and tarnished his reputation. I feel that is something that cannot be stressed enough- Kristoph was willing to kill an innocent young girl just to save face.

Despite these flaws, and his own keen observational nature, Kristoph is largely blind to his own faults. He is quite happy to believe that he is perfect and flawless. Even when someone has seen his true nature, he is quick to slip back into her outward persona and act as if that other part of himself never existed to begin with- though you can bet that underneath that, he is plotting the other person's demise even underneath the gentlemanly veneer. In the final case, his former protege, Apollo Justice, remarks that even still it is difficult not to think of Kristoph as his boss, even though they haven't been working together for many months- and Apollo was there to witness Kristoph's conviction first-hand. This shows that, even though those around him know his true colors, he is still able to inspire respect from them.

His brother has been mentioned several times, but one of Kristoph's other main canon relationships is that with Phoenix Wright. This, again, shows how superficial he is- he pretended to be Phoenix's friend for years, winning him over by standing up for him in his disbarment hearing. Kristoph keeps his enemies close to him, and after he was first convicted and was visited by Phoenix in his jail cell, slipped back into the friendly banter he and Phoenix had once shared. It is clear, however, that he kept Phoenix at a distance while even masquerading as his friend- examination of Kristoph's jail cell reveals that Phoenix didn't know simple things about Kristoph- like the fact that he had a pet dog.

It should be stated that Kristoph is generally mentally unbalanced. When sentenced for the final time, all that Kristoph could do was laugh- and did so loudly that it echoed through the courthouse. Now, he is calm and generally collected, so he isn't a madman- he just isn't stable sometimes. When pushed to his edge, he snaps, and with that comes several facial twitching that hints that there is something inherently unstable about him.

With his superficial charms, his deftness at lying, his rage, his impulsiveness to bring about his revenge, his complete lack of guilt over his murder (and attempted murder, in Vera Misham's case), the way he uses people without remorse, his manipulativeness, and the fact that he holds himself up over the common "mouth-breathers", as he calls them, Kristoph marks himself as a near (if not complete) sociopath- though he would never admit that anything was wrong with himself in the first place.

Abilities/Strengths: Kristoph is, for all intents and purposes, a regular human. He has the ability to think quickly and bluff, to control a situation and inspire others to follow him. He can win the loyalty of others easily, and though he wears a mask of deception, he is able to see situations clearly and is a very perceptive. He's a frighteningly intelligent man, and when he is rational he is a near-genius. He is also an accomplished violinist, and can play the piano fairly. He has a knowledge of poisons, and is also practices judo and is a fair fencer.

Weaknesses: As I have said, Kristoph is very resistant to change. He also keeps people at a distance, never trusting them to see the real him (this applies to even his family). He is delusional, and thinks of himself as perfect and his own actions as the act of the law. When he becomes emotional, he is unreasonable, callous, and is nothing short of a rage-and-ego-driven monster. Also, despite being controlled and intelligent, he is prone to making dumb mistakes.

I'm not going to quote the whole poem, but yeah. The Spider and the Fly- Mary Howitt

Other: The rest of the Gavin family is never touched on in canon, and with it looking like the sequel to Apollo Justice is far down the line, I am substituting headcanon for the time being.

Kristoph and Klavier grew up in Germany, in a small city outside of Munich called "Rothenburg ob der Tauber". Their father was a prominent defense attorney named Kristian Gavin, and Kristoph was an only child until his brother's birth. Kristoph frequently had behavioral issues as a child, but otherwise, he had a relatively normal childhood. His mother was cold and distant, sharing in many of the same personality flaws that Kristoph has (indeed, he even looks more like her than his father).

When Kristoph was eight, his brother was born. Kristoph hated him at first, feeling that Klavier was stealing away the attention of his parents...but he quickly figured out that having Klavier around wasn't so bad- without his parents constantly watching him, he could get away with more. After time, Klavier attached himself to his brother, nearly idolizing him. Kristoph would punish Klavier for small things by locking him in closets or pushing him down, but Klavier never told on him. In school, Kristoph was often ostracized by the other children because he lacked so many things that make a good person- emotions, empathy, and Kristoph was not afraid to tell someone that he thought he was better than they were. He got top marks in his classes, but would sometimes lash out at other students. Kristoph was taught by his father how to play the piano, and took violin lessons while his brother took voice lessons.

In his early teens, the family relocated to Los Angeles, California. He attended a private school and took up fencing and judo, and during this time learned how to control and manipulate people, and how to act polite and friendly on the surface. He was skipped ahead a few grades, and graduated early. Kristoph, admiring the perfect control his father seemed to have over the courtroom, decided that he would go into law, as well, and enrolled in college.

When he was seventeen, his parents were killed in a car accident. Having no relatives in the United States, Kristoph pushed for his own legal emancipation and became Klavier's legal guardian. Klavier was sent to school in Germany while Kristoph completed his studies and passed the bar exam. Kristoph had trouble filling his father's shoes, and started out small- in divorce court, before trying to move on to criminal law. The Shadi Enigmar case was to be his big break into the world of criminal law...if only it weren't for a lost poker game.
