After nearly a year without any substantial time off at all, my upcoming four-day weekend can't come quickly enough. And that's not just an expression, because, seriously, my brain seems to be shutting down.
Let's see...not only have I been forgetful about random work things, but my concept of the calendar is completely borked. I forgot to pay my rent on Thursday, and didn't even realize it until yesterday afternoon, when I was running through Arathi Basin, trying to get a Hallow's End achievement. All of a sudden, I was waiting to resurrect, and it hit me: "Oh, shit, I didn't pay my rent!"
Thankfully, I don't live in a massive apartment complex, and my landlady was very understanding. She knew it was an honest case of October getting away from me, and told me that she hadn't known that it was rent-time, either, so she turned down my repeated offers of paying extra. This has made me determined to write down my monthly expenses somewhere, so that they're always right in front of me (I really need a sodding calendar in my apartment, for starters).
So Wednesday evening will be the beginning of a much-needed respite. Four whole days of absolutely no obligations; I can get up, fetch Starbucks, catch up on my reading, and continue questing deeper into Northrend (Leah finally arrived in the Borean Tundra last night, and has already gotten some much needed gear upgrades).
In other good news, my two-year relationship with Mediacom ends this week. I originally planned on just getting rid of my cable, and still keeping my internet service with them, but the tech support person decided to play rough and said there would be a $30 service fee for them to send the truck out to disconnect it, on top of a $15 per month increase in internet charges. Never mind that I've never been threatened with a service fee at any other point when I've needed a technician to fix something in the past.
If that was going to be the case, I told the support representative, then I'm just going to quit my service altogether.
"Could you hold for a minute, please?" she asked.
Five minutes later, she came back on, telling me they would let me keep my current package for $89, which is about $55 less than I'm paying right now. When I asked her how long that would last, she told me 12 months, which is how Mediacom works. They're more worried about roping in new customers with highly-reduced deals on their packages than they are about keeping and rewarding the customers who stick with them. I'm pretty sure my bills were so high just so a new customer could get a great, one-year deal.
I hesitated over the $89 offer, but only for a minute. As nicely as I could, I told off the support person, telling her that I wasn't interested in continuing to deal with limited-time price options, and was still wanting to say sayonara. No sooner than I hung up from my Mediacom call, I dialed the local telecom company and purchased a 10 mbs cable internet plan with them for $53 per month, tax-free. They're coming this afternoon to hook me up.
So if I can just get through today, press day, and Wednesday, I'm home free for a few days. God knows I can use it.
