A good weekend

Finally, I found a salon that does not have posters of models with puffy bangs, ramen curls, purple makeup and shoulder pads, a clientele that resembles the sins of those models, and other embarrassing artifacts from the 80’s. Do not get me wrong. The Vietnamese radio and TV blasting around the Eden Center was cool - it made me feel like I was back in Southeast Asia - but the style is just not my cup of tea.

So, I walked around downtown and discovered a Korean hairdresser. I showed Anthony a picture of my haircut back in London, and he was able to somewhat re-create it. I still prefer the Malaysian hairdressers in London though; I like the extreme way they textured my hair. In addition to the haircut, I added some red highlights to my hair. They show pretty well under the sunlight, but remain quite subtle indoors. Guess I can look both fun and professional. I will see if time permits me to take some narcissistic pictures to post here.

There is something unintentionally funky about the salon. I sat before a mirror mounted on a piece of glass panel, such that I can see my own reflection in the mirror, and the lower half of the opposite customer directly below. Several times, for a split second, I was confused. “These are not my pants,” I thought. “Wait a minute, I am not crossing my legs,” I thought. When I was seated elsewhere to wait for the colors to settle, I could see this girl’s reflection with the lower half of some other guy. I was terribly amused.

I visited the Tidal Basin to catch a glimpse of the sakuras on Sunday. The peak bloom was forecasted to start on Monday, so there were still a lot of buds. Nonetheless, it was a poetic sight of reds and whites, albeit a little too cold and windy for me. I have not reviewed my pictures of the sakuras yet; I am expecting a lot of blur ones because the sakuras were dancing around to the wind. I took pictures of some other budding flowers around the Mall as well. I could feel that spring was certainly round the corner.

On my way home, I got sucked into a gallery showing some gorgeous collections of Hokusai, a Japanese artist from the Tokugawa period ((1760-1849). All the museums in DC are free and seem to have some really exciting collections. I am looking forward to be a museum rat for the next few weekends.

I did not get to a Korean store for my kimchi supplies this weekend. But I discovered this and this I am feeling a little lazy…
