Tonight we're going to hang out with Elvira, Mistress of the Dark!
-Recap: Tate won last week, and Lyma did not.
-Foundation challenge: reinvent Elvira, because she's going to be on SyFy's new show Fangasm soon. The prize is immunity and a Krylon makeup kit. Woot!
-Good lord, Elvira
looks EXACTLY the same as she always has... Has she sold her soul to the devil? She says her look is so iconic because of a couple of big things: her eyes and her personality. :P
-They have two hours for this challenge, and have been provided with stylists to do the models' hair, tons of false eyelashes, and and fancy new Krylon makeup.
-I don't know enough about Elvira to judge if these makeups are good reinventions of her or not. In fact, I'm realizing right now that I don't know a whole lot about Elvira at all.
-Tate did nurse Elvira, Roy went with a bat theme, and Frank did a Creature from the Black Lagoon. Elvira picked
Roy as the winner, which is surprising to me because I thought she liked Tate's more. Whatever, Roy's was also good. I think Roy won immunity last week too, didn't he?
-Now they're in an art gallery, where there are funky painting that represent iconic art movements. The spotlight challenge is to select one of these art movements (expressionism, cubism, surrealism, pop art, and constructivism), and create a character who could live in it. This seems super cool to me.
-Neville is here to give them advice, because I guess he's an artist as well as a makeup designer? He tells them to be faithful to whatever movement they pick, and make living works of art.
-Alana and I both don't know what constructivism is, but she's going for it. Meanwhile, Laney wants to do something with face paint underneath a mask.
-Laura's sketch is SO COOL, and she's better than most at translating sketches to reality, so I'm excited for hers.
-Eddie has decided on some kind of angry version of Starry Night, Tate has sketched a fortress man, and Alana is regretting choosing constructivism.
-Scott wants to do a surrealism tribute to his dead alcoholic father, with a volcano as a head. Ok then.
-Miranda is still asking Tate's opinion on everything. I mean, he's who I would ask for advice too, but MAN UP, MIRANDA.
-Alana is lost with constructivism, but Frank (who picked the same movement) is doing something about iron/steel falling to plastic, which is deep, man.
-Here come the Westmores! Michael cautions Scott not to get too busy with his different props, Roy to be careful with his paint job, Alana to eliminate the facial features in her square dude, and Eddie not to do Starry Night by using reds and yellows. This should have been obvious.
-Laura assesses, correctly I think, since it's what Neville said too, that these have to be thought of not as makeups but as works of art.
-Alana seems to have gotten her shit together somewhat. I really think Eddie needs to go home though.
-Tate's mold is HUGE, and he estimates he's used about 300 pounds of clay. I know from the sneak peak last week that this is going to be relevant later.
-Everything everyone is doing looks so cool! Except Eddie.
-Oops. Tate put his 300 pounds of clay, in the mold, down on his hand and totally smashed his fingers. There's blood everywhere, and they're bringing in the medics. And now Tate has been carted off to the hospital in a van, much to his dismay.
-Laura and Roy, bless them, have opened Tate's mold, and everyone who has any spare time helps clean it out. These people are amazing.
-Laney's mold is super heavy too, and she asks for help with it because she doesn't want to "pull a Tate." I'm glad you can joke about this, Laney, even though it happened like 15 minutes ago.
-Tate is back! He got 13 stitches, but his mold is cleaned out and has latex in it already. Tate takes a minute to hug everyone, and then jumps right back in. I love this fucking show. No one ever helps their fellow competitors this much on Project Runway.
-Tate is worried about how behind he is, but you'd think they'd make a 'trip to the ER' allowance of some extra time for him or something.
-Laura is painting her stuff with an actual paint brush, because cubism paintings have brushstrokes. This is GENIUS.
-I tentatively love Laney's makeup at this point.
-Miranda is having her model help her make a guitar, and Alana is really behind because her cowl ripped and she had to fix it. They're both in trouble and they know it.
-Time's up, Alana is crying because her model is not totally painted, and I am :(
-No guest judge this week either. They dragged Elvira out for 10 minutes of screen time?
-Alana's
doesn't look like a total train wreck, though the paint job is obviously sloppy. I'm not sure what's up with the
giant box, but then again I don't actually know WTF constructivism is; maybe that's dead on. The
face is really neat though. (ETA: Wikipedia says, "Constructivism was an artistic and architectural philosophy that originated in Russia beginning in 1919, which was a rejection of the idea of autonomous art. The movement was in favor of art as a practice for social purposes." So, you know, there you go. I continue to learn things from Face Off.)
-Eddie's
looks sloppy to me, but I do get the
van Gogh feel he was going for.
-Laney's is so
immediately evocative of pop art, it's amazing. I don't know if she ditched the mask idea, or if
it's just clear, (Edit: I'm pretty sure it's there and clear) but I really like her makeup and props. Excellent job.
-Miranda's is
really lack luster. Her
face is cubist, and well done, but the rest of the model is very plain and the guitar doesn't look that great.
-Wow, Laura,
wow.
That is
seriously impressive.
-Scott's is
weird as fuck, which is kind of perfect since it's mean to be surrealism. It's a very
Magritte version of surrealism, and the cigarette is extremely life like.
-I don't know that I totally get
Roy's concept, but the
makeup itself looks pretty damn good.
-Umm, Frank? That thing is AMAZING.
It looks like a statue, not at all like a person. And I LOVE the
big halo thing behind him, that really adds to the 'painting' effect.
-Tate, what on earth is that? I forgot what his idea was, after all the finger smashing, but it sure is
big and
bizarre!
-On closer inspection, the judges don't seem to hate Alana's, but they don't like Eddie's, or the plain arms on Miranda's, or Scott's volcano makeup. The like Laura's paint job and the bulges on Roy's, and the forced perspective steel beam of Frank's. They don't really get surrealism from Tate's, and I don't either, sadly.
-Alana is safe, and I think she might actually pass out from surprise. Frank and Roy are also safe. I kind of think Frank's was the best, but ok.
-REALLY?! They actually like Miranda's, and everyone, including Miranda and myself, are super surprised. She said herself she was disappointed in it, and Hattrick was like, "nah girl, it's super cubist!" I mean, he's right, it's amazingly accurate to cubism, but I still don't find it that impressive as a makeup. At least Ve called her out on the plain arm.
-Tate's is so weird, even for surrealism, but I doubt it's bad enough to go home over. And he might get some sympathy for the crushed hand (which, BTW, looks HORRIBLE. Besides the stitches, it's noticeably purple and swollen). Neville (accurately, I'm afraid) says that what Tate's created is more a costume than a makeup.
-The judges do not like Eddie's, and I don't either. I don't think I've liked anything Eddie has done, actually.
-Hatrick calls Laura's stunning, and he's not wrong. Ve says it's mind boggling, and Neville agrees times 10. This one has got to win, it is perfect in every way.
-I have seen three or four 'volcanic' makeups on this show, and they never go over well... including this one. Ve doesn't like the volcano face, and neither does Hattrick, who says it looks like a tree stump.
-They like Laney's, yay! There is a lot of red on her face, as Ve said, but overall they love it. It is really obviously pop art, and I love her super cool newspaper skirt that I didn't even notice at first.
-The judges all agree that Laney beat everyone in 'presenting your movement in a concise way', but Tate's is too much of a costume. Please don't send Tate home!
-Winner: Laura! (YAY! She seriously deserved this.) Hattrick called it possibly her best work yet. :D
-And Scott is eliminated. I have to say, this feels like it was overdue. (AND THANK GOD IT WASN'T TATE). BTW, how heartless would they have looked if they had eliminated Tate? Very, that's how.
-Next week: Something about aliens. The previews on this show are super unhelpful.
ETA: Pictures now included!
Answer to last Tuesday's song: Halloween, from Rent. Janeea got this one right!
