Characters:
Ruby, a Yankee’s fan
Molly, a Red Sox fan
Heidi, a friend of Molly

Setting:
A high school hallway.

Scene 1

Molly and Ruby enter, walking down the hall and talking. They are in the middle of a conversation. Ruby is wearing a Yankees jersey. Molly is wearing a light jacket that completely covers her shirt.

Molly: I can’t go to the game with you Ruby, I just… can’t.

Ruby: (thrusting tickets at Molly) Molly, do you know what these are?

Molly: You know I don’t. I don’t follow baseball.

Ruby: These are Yankees/Red Sox tickets! It’s virtually impossible to get these! You HAVE to come with me! Even if you don’t understand baseball, this is a once in a lifetime thing! You’ll never get this chance again!

Molly: I can’t Ruby, I have to go to… um…my… cousin’s wedding that day…

Ruby: Come on, explain to your parents, they’ll let you miss one wedding. I bet you have lots of other cousins.

Molly: I’ll try... But I don’t think they’ll go for it. You’d be better off looking for someone else to go with you.

Ruby: Molly, you're my girlfriend. I don’t want to go with anyone else! It’s you or no one.

Molly: You can’t do that. You’ll never get this chance again either. You have to go, even if it is without me.

Ruby: (warningly) Molly...

Molly: There’s the bell. We’d better get to class. We can talk about this later.

Scene 2

Later the same day. Molly and Heidi enter, walking down the hall.

Heidi: So what’s up? You’ve been weird all afternoon.

Molly: Ruby invited me to go somewhere with her, but I can’t go.

Heidi: Well that sucks, but I don’t think you should be this upset about it. Unless it was somewhere really good… Where did she want to take you?

Molly: To a Red Sox/Yankees game.

Heidi:Ooo, that is good. So why can’t you go? (Molly gives her a look) What? Oh. OH! Ooooohhhh. Cause she doesn’t know, right?

Molly: (overly dramatic) No, and I can’t tell her either! She’ll break up with me, never speak to me again, hate me forever, my life will be over and-

Heidi: Calm down! If she really likes you, she’ll understand. I mean, you know about her and you’re still dating her right?

Molly: Well, yeah, but she didn’t lie about it either. And besides, I still couldn’t go to the game. So it’d be just as bad, and she’d still be mad at me because I lied and because-

Heidi: (over the end of Molly’s line) It’s not the end of the world that

Both: I/you like the Red Sox!

Scene 3

After school, the same day. Molly sees Ruby at her locker, and seems to make up her mind. She takes a deep breath, and walks determinedly over to Ruby.

Molly: Ruby, I have something to tell you. Now it won’t be easy to hear, but…

Ruby: Did you cheat on me?

Molly: No! No. No, it’s not that.

Ruby: You’re straight?

Molly: No! Will you just listen? (Ruby nods) I don’t have a wedding to go to. I don’t even have any cousins that are old enough to get married. I can’t go to the game with you because (Molly goes center, throws her bag down melodramatically, and rips off her jacket to reveal a Red Sox jersey. She throws her head back and strikes a dramatic pose) I AM A RED SOX FAN! (Molly collapses in a heap.)

Ruby: (slowly) Molly? Molly? (Ruby walks to her) Molly, are you ok?

Molly: (heavily) Yeah. So? (she motions at her jersey) Do you hate me? Are you going to dump me? I promise I’ll understand if you never want to speak to me again.

Ruby: Do you really think baseball matters that much to me? More than you? I mean, I know the Yankees are important to life, but I’m not going to break up with you over a difference in baseball teams.

Molly: You’re not?

Ruby: No.

Molly: But I lied to you too. I said I wasn’t into baseball…

Ruby: Well, I think I can forgive that. I can see where you were coming from. You were completely wrong of course, but still.

Molly: It’s really not that big of a deal to you? You were so excited about those tickets… And what about the rivalry and all?

Ruby: (sighing) You know Jeff?

Molly: Your best friend Jeff?

Ruby: Yeah. He’s a Red Sox fan. Always has been. And I still like him.

Molly: Oh. So we’re ok then?

Ruby: (Helping her up) Yes dear.

Molly: But what will people think? A Yankee’s fan and a Red Sox fan, dating? Won’t people talk? Call us names?

Ruby: Probably. But you see, none of that matters. All that matters is that we’re happy. That it’s ok with us what we do. And it’s none of their business what teams we root for behind closed doors. We’re ok with who we are and what we’re doing, and everybody else can either accept our relationship as fans of rival teams, or they can just shut up. Ok?

Molly: Ok. You didn’t find anyone else to go to the game, did you?

Ruby: Nope. I told you, it’s either you or no one.

Molly: Can I go then? And sit next to you? And root for the Sox?

Ruby: Of course. Just let me tell my mom about you ok? She’s sort of old fashioned about things like baseball teams.

Molly: Got it. (suggestively) You still coming over to do our ‘Bio homework’?

Ruby: Absolutely. (Exit, holding hands)

The markup for that was a nightmare, by the way.

Comment, critique, compliment, tell me: did the point come through clearly? I'll probably have handed it in by the time I get any comments, but I'll appreciate it just the same.
