Alohas and Blue Hens, among other things.

Ask me 6 months ago what I'd be doing after graduation, and I'd confidently tell you that I'd be going to grad school for my PhD in marine biology. Ask me 2 months ago, and I'd tell you that I had no idea if I was going to find an adviser that could fund my graduate research, and therefore might have to wait a year to go to grad school. After numerous trips, applications, interviews, and disappointments, I know for sure.

I'll be working under Mark Warner at the College of Marine and Earth Studies of UDel, for my Masters in Marine Biosciences. Somehow, I'll still be 2 hours from good ol' K of P. I'm really excited for this--the funding is great, the location (Lewes/Rehoboth Beach) is awesome, and the research is perfect (physiological effects of climate change and environmental stressors on the symbiotic algae that live in coral). I'll be collecting field samples and observations on reefs down in Mexico, and then doing molecular analyses back in the lab in Delaware. I'll be able to bypass the Masters for the PhD if I want, but I don't know yet.

But this won't start until September, so I was left with this curiously empty summer. I solved that problem just today. I bought a round trip ticket to Hawaii, where I will live for June and July. Why? Just because. There were some internship opportunities, but I won't know be notified for some time. I plan on getting a job at a restaurant or dive shop if the internship falls through. Where will I live? My best friend from middle school moved to Hawaii before 9th grade with her family, and has been there ever since. I'm living with her for the summer and I'm pretty sure that it's going to be amazing. This may be the most rash and ridiculous thing I ever do with my life, but it will be worth it. I've always wanted to go to Hawaii...and once school starts, my summers will be for research, not spontaneous trips. I bet the diving and reefs are incredible too!

Perfect :o)

~Aloha~
