Okay, first thing is...
I don't know how my picture post got so screwed up before, but I fixed it! go look at them here: http://www.livejournal.com/users/lehaha3586/133624.html

Yeah, a lot's happened, Interlochen is amazing in some ways, pretty horrible in others. Every day is filled with a ton of stress, and I would have a nervous breakdown if some of my kids weren't so wonderful. They're leaving today, tomorrow, and Sunday, and I've already been crying about it.

Anyways, I wanna talk about one girl, Maddy. She has Osteosarcoma (http://kidshealth.org/parent/medical/cancer/cancer_osteosarcoma.html), went through surgery to have both her kneecaps replaced, has gone through chemo twice, and is about the size of an 8 year old. She had to walk around with a knee brace for most of the session, so it was really difficult for her to get around the campus. It was her first time away from home and she was really homesick at the beginning. We constantly went and sat by the lake at the beginning of the session, and she'd talk about how much she missed home, how she didn't like living in cabins, and how she felt like she didn't fit in with the other girls. However, every day she got a little stronger, and after 5 days or so she was just as loud and giggly and social as all the other girls in the cabin. And still the sweetest- someone stole her packs of gum, and when her parents got her more, she shared it with the whole cabin. She's making earrings for everyone and necklaces for those who don't have pierced ears. She finishes other peoples' chores if she doesn't think the cabin is clean enough, even though it's harder for her to complete the tasks than it would be for someone else. I nominated her for honor camper for our unit (each unit is about 5 cabins), and she came in SUCH a close second, to a girl from France who came here and apparently adjusted really well. I cried when she didn't get the award because I felt like it was my fault that she didn't get it because I didn't represent her well enough when I was nominating her. But, the amazing thing is, Maddy didn't even care whether she got the award. It's not like she stayed positive and sweet in order to be rewarded, that's just the way she is. All that she said was that it was "so sweet" of me to think of her in the first place. She's so special, and I learned a lot from her.

Yay Maddy!

More later.
