My 83-year old father fell off the steps today. He didn't exactly fall down the stairs. He was standing on the second step to reach a bit of hardware, then forgot that the was 18" off the ground and turned around to walk away.
He remembered what they taught him in the army during WWII about falling. Don't try too hard to catch yourself, or you'll hurt one part of you badly. Instead, land on lots of parts, and hurt each of them a little bit.
It would have worked just fine, sore knee, hip, rib and shoulder, if his face hadn't hit the corner of a work bench and poked a hole in his cheek.
Unfortunately at the time I was on Long Island. I got the message just as I was starting home, but even with very cooperative traffic, it took me an hour and a half to get there. When I saw that it wasn't just a scrape, but was a hole through his cheek, we took him to Immediate Care, where he sat for half an hour, then got four stitches and some antibiotics.
These things happen. He feels foolish for falling like that and for "inconveniencing" me. I'm glad he did it here instead of in Texas, where he lived just two months ago.
I'm glad they're here, where we can help look after them when things like this happen. I hope I'm not glad like this for a while now, though. Today was just about exciting enough, thank you.
