Author’s Note: This was supposed to be for Yuto’s birthday, but obviously, I’m ten hours late in finishing this (even though it’s still August 10 here)...to tell the truth, I began to write it three days ago...then today, when I got fed up with running into a brick wall, I ended up scrapping five pages worth...and writing another five pages within three hours...I hope everyone reading it enjoys it. I’m pretty proud of it, if I do say so myself. It broke my heart that I can’t introduce everyone to my rendition of Yamada-mama yet, though. ):
On his fourteenth birthday, Yuto wakes up finding himself in a dark, enclosed space, feeling a slight weight pressing down on his chest and arms wrapping around his torso. Trying to force himself to remember the events of the night before, he yawns, things coming back little by little. Eventually, he realizes that the weight on his chest is not just any weight, but none other than Yamada Ryosuke.
Panicking a little when he realizes so, Yuto’s mind quickly reminds him that they were not doing anything suspicious, and that they are stuck in a closet after a kimodameshi prank gone wrong (Yuto also ends up making a mental note to kill Chinen, Daiki, and Takaki once he gets himself out of this stupid closet).
Yuto tries to sit more comfortably without waking up the older teenager lying on top of him, but he figures that he has failed when Yamada begins to stir.
“Yama-chan? Are you awake now?” he whispers softly (why he’s whispering, he doesn’t know either).
Yamada’s arms move from the hugging position he fell asleep in, and he rubs his eyes after pushing himself into a sitting position on Yuto’s lap. He grumbles, “Yuto, remind me to never fall asleep on you again. You feel nothing like a pillow.”
Yuto laughs at his friend, telling himself ‘At least there’s one good thing about being stuck in a closet on your birthday.’ “It’s not my fault you fell asleep on me.”
“If you left me alone, I would’ve slept peacefully enough.”
“You were crying. Do you think I can leave any of my friends alone when they’re crying?”
Yamada pauses, trying to think of a good way to talk back to that last statement. “Fine, you win. Laugh at the baby, hmm?” he pouts.
Yuto merely smiles at him and replies, “Yama-chan, I’d never laugh at you for something like that! Besides, you’re cuter than a baby.” He pinches the other’s right cheek before pulling him into a hug. “Just remember that if you want to cry again, you have my shoulder to lean on, okay?” he whispers again.
Yamada is silent again, praying that the stillness of the air won’t be disturbed by the sound of his heart beating as he clumsily returns the hug, merely leaning on top of Yuto. It’s times like these that he hates most when his heart threatens to betray emotions he’s tried to keep inside for so long (‘He’s a friend and will always be a friend, just that’ Yamada thinks, telling himself the same thing he’s told himself every day since he realized the true nature of his feelings towards Yuto). He especially hates these moments, because Yuto is just being his old friendly self and his heart chooses to interpret them as mixed messages; Yamada continues to say nothing when he finds himself crying over the truth.
When Yuto hears him sniffle, he can’t help but smile more, patting his friend on the back, and jokes, “When I said it’s okay to cry, I didn’t think you’d be crying again this soon!”
Yamada let out a shaky sigh, and replied, “G-gomen...” He forces himself to stop the tears falling from his eyes after wiping them away with the cuff of his sleeves, and blinks multiple times so his eyes can focus properly again.
When a bright light floods the closet all too quickly after it opens, the pair find themselves looking at the faces of their band mates, who proceed to burst out laughing at them.
“We leave you two in a closet for one night and you’re being all lovey-dovey?” Takaki smirks at them. Yamada blushes as he climbs off Yuto, who then throws the nearest object he could grab-a dry sponge from off the floor-at the oldest member of Hey!Say!7.

A week has passed by since Yuto’s birthday, and Yamada has been avoiding Yuto since. While Arioka and Takaki are both oblivious to it, Chinen is not happy and decides to utilize Nakamaru-sempai’s way of peacemaking on his own friends. Being too short to do it on his own, Chinen convinces Arioka and Takaki to shove the two in another closet at the Johnny’s building to force them to make up.
After five minutes of banging against the door and protesting that there was nothing to make up for, Yamada sighs and gives up. He sits down on the floor and curls up in a ball, hugging his knees.
Yuto’s been worried about it, too, so after silently thanking Chinen for doing this, he kneels in front of the shorter male, placing a hand on Yamada’s knee. “Did I do something wrong?”
Yamada shakes his head and responds, “It’s not your fault at all-it’s my own problem to deal with, and I’m sorry I’ve been worrying all of you...”
“If it’s your problem, then,” Yuto gives him a stern look, moving closer and grabbing his shoulders, “why aren’t you letting any of us help?!”
For the first time in so many days, Yamada looks Yuto in the eye, even if only for a brief moment, before averting his gaze. “You wouldn’t understand.”
Yuto’s facial expression softens as his hands leave Yamada, even though he himself doesn’t change position. “How are you so sure of that when we don’t even know what you’re beating yourself up over? Chinen...Dai-chan...Takaki...they all care about you. I care about you a lot, too, Yama-chan. I don’t want to see you trying to deal with something you can’t deal with all on your own, because you aren’t alone.” He responds too quietly for his voice to reach Yuto’s ears. “What?”
And he repeats himself this time, louder and in a choked voice. “You don’t know that I care about you more than you ever could for me.”
Yuto’s face shows his obvious confusion. “Excuse me?”
All of his questions are answered when Yamada closes the gap between them and lightly kisses him on the mouth, revealing almost two years’ worth of hidden emotions. Just as quickly as he started, the older boy pulls back and ends it, leaving Yuto stunned.
Chinen opens the door, deciding that it was about time he let them out, and Yamada quickly takes that chance to run away, embarrassed at what he just did.
---
When Yuto is trapped in another room the next day, he’s glad it’s not with Yamada again; after the events of the day before, Yuto decided to avoid Yamada, too. Unfortunately, being stuck with three insane band mates who were the ones who dragged and locked you in there with them isn’t much better.
“Minna...” he laughs humorlessly, “do you really need to lock me in here with you?”
“Yes.” they all reply in unison, all looking serious.
Yuto’s nervous smile quickly turns into a sad frown, and he sighs. “This is about Yama-chan, isn’t it?”
“What else could it be?!” Daiki replies angrily.
Takaki adds, “Do you think we’re stupid enough not to notice what the problem was even though you didn’t say anything?”
Chinen crosses his arms. “We know you like him back, Yuto. Really, what’s it going to take for you to tell him that-make you wear a skirt and a wig?!”
“Perhaps,” Yuto replies sarcastically. Upon seeing Takaki and Arioka’s evil smiles, he suddenly regrets saying so.
“Oh...we can arrange that,” Takaki says.
Arioka finishes, “Indeed we can, Yuko-chan.”
Yuto gulps and his eyes widen in horror. “Please don’t tell me you’re going to do what I think you’re going to do...”
“Just be ready tomorrow, all right?” the oldest two say together, and with that, they release Yuto from their captivity.
---
One more day passes by and our favorite pair are stuck once again. Perhaps the only difference between this time that Yamada and Yuto were stuck in places they clearly did not want to be in and all of the other incidents was the fact that while it happened simultaneously, they were in different locations.
---
“Ya-ma-da-ku-n~!” Takaki says innocently when he sees him next.
Yamada barely gives a glance as he responds, “If this is about Yuto, I don’t want to talk about it.”
“Relax, relax...” Takaki tries to reassure him, “this isn’t about him. I actually might have a solution to that problem, you know...” He hands the younger boy a small envelope with nothing but “山田くん” written on it.
Yamada stares at it curiously, and then turns his attention back to Takaki. “What’s this?”
“I dunno; my cousin asked me to give it to you,” he replies. “Though, knowing her, it’s probably a love letter; she has this insanely huge crush on you...”
As soon as those words left Takaki’s mouth, Yamada holds the unopened envelope out to him, trying to hand it back to him. “Not interested. You know very well who I like, and it’s not her.”
Takaki pats Yamada on the head, saying, “I know that, but at least acknowledge her? She’s been really shy about the entire thing, and she’s liked you for at least two years now...”
“So? Still not interested.”
“Then go tell her that. Be a man. Girls would rather hear ‘I don’t like you’ than get stood up, you know...” Takaki paused for a while, thinking about what he was going to say next-he was not going to let this plan of theirs fail, dammit! “If she tells me you never showed up, Yamada-kun, I don’t think you’ll like tomorrow too much.”
Yamada was scared. Judging from the look on Takaki’s face, he was serious. “Okay, fine, fine, I’ll meet with her!” He put the letter in his bag to read later.
Takaki smirked and walked away, pulling out his cell phone. He then sent an SMS to Arioka.
My part’s done. Now it’s your turn.
---
“I’m not going to dress up in a seifuku! Skirts are itchy, dammit!” Yuto protests, pushing the bag of girls’ clothing that Chinen was currently trying to give him away from him.
“You sound like Inoo,” Arioka laughs. “And even though he says that every time, he still ends up playing a girl.”
“So?!”
“You do it, too! Don’t you want to make up with Yamada-kun?!” Chinen frowns.
Yuto sighs before taking the bag into his hands. “Fine, I’ll follow along in the plan.” He shoos the two out of his room, and proceeds to change into the clothes.
When Yuto-mama burst out laughing at her son (now temporarily daughter) with both Daiki and Chinen after he walked into the living room, Yuto glared at all three of them. “Ki. Ra. I. Yo,” he hisses, placing an emphasis on each syllable.
Yuto-mama pats him on his wig and says, “You’re so cute! I think I should have had a daughter instead of a son!”
“Kaa-san.”
Yuto-mama only smiles at him.
“Now, Yuko-chan~ time for your confession, ne!” Chinen grins.
Yuto was going to regret this for the rest of his life; he could feel it.
---
Yuto was patiently sitting down on the bench that the others had designated as the meeting place for him and Yamada watching the seconds pass by on his watch ever so-slowly. He sighs, growing more and more impatient. He begins to think that Yama-chan won’t even show up, and that thought somewhat depresses him.
Yet when he hears someone walk up behind him, Yuto has a feeling that he’s finally here, and commands in his best female impersonation possible, “Stop right there.” Yamada complies and Yuto is glad-this would delay the discovery of his identity. “Is this...Yama-ch”-Yuto forgets for a moment that he isn’t supposed to be himself just for that moment, and quickly tries to cover up his mistake-“Yamada-kun?”
“H-hai,” he replies, slightly confused as to why this girl refuses to show her face to him.
“Yokatta...” Yuto smiles, still speaking in the high-pitched voice.
Yamada let out a heavy sigh. “Ano...Yuko-chan?”
“Hai?”
“I can’t accept your feelings. There’s...another person that I like.”
Yuto winces; having that said to him (even though he really wasn’t Nakajima Yuto then) stung a lot more than he thought it would’ve. “I-is that so?” he manages to squeak. At least the fact that he was about to cry made it a lot more authentic.
“One more thing...”
“What is it?”
“I’d at least like to say it to your face, Yuko-chan. Talking like this makes me feel kind of like a coward...”
Yuto takes a deep breath. He decides that it’s safe for him to turn around now, but when Yamada has a hurt expression on his face, Yuto regrets that decision.
“...it was you all along?”
Yuto nods and responds in his normal voice, “The others made me do it.”
Yamada looks at the ground and says, “I-I s-see...” He turns around and begins to walk away, hurt that his “friends” decided to play this weird trick on him and angry at himself for believing that someone would actually confess to him, even if he was going to turn her down in the end.
Yuto stands up from the bench and runs after him. When he catches up to Yamada, he holds the shorter boy in his arms, content even if they aren’t facing each other.
“Yuto...l-let go of me...” Yamada says, just standing there waiting to be released.
Yuto replies into his ear, “Don’t want to.”
Then Yamada really begins to cry. “W-why are you still here? Th-the others made you do t-that for me, didn’t they?”
Yuto smiles a sad smile, then turns the other around, making him face him. “But they didn’t make me do this.” He closes his eyes and leans his face towards Yamada’s, kissing him. Yuto’s smile is contagious and makes Yama-chan smile, too.
When Yuto pulls away from him, Yamada states, “That...would’ve been a lot more romantic if you weren’t dressed as a girl right now.”

The subsequent times the pair are stuck alone in a closet, they take full advantage of their newfound privacy, making Chinen take a mental note that Nakamaru-sempai’s strategy would be a very bad one to utilize from that point onwards.
