In two months, I will have spent a year here. Things have really changed a lot during all this time, this place is restless.

Mello is awake. He seems all right, although he is still feeling weak.

Also, my new twin asked me questions about the previous Near's Death Note, I told him everything I know.

Interesting. If you consider him your twin, I may treat him a bit less like a stranger.
Did he ask about the Kira case?
Were you able to discern why his screening skills were so poor upon his arrival?

No, he was merely interested in the previous Near's Death Note. Suspicious, but I decided not to deny him the information.

He has lost the Kira case, his arrival happened a few minutes before his real death. He felt lost and defeated.

As I said, he had lost the Kira case. In his world, Kira won the game and was about to kill him, right after killing the whole SPK and his own allies from the Japanese police.

The SPK is the organization I led. It consists of FBI and CIA agents, all of them under my command.

The Mello in his world seems to be alive yet. I wonder why he was not interested in Near's meeting with Kira, such a behaviour is strange in the Mello we know.

Why American resources? How many people, and how did you secure their support?

Do you know for certain that Mello was not interested, or is it possible that he was keeping his moves secret? I agree, disinterest is unlike what I would have anticipated.

It was the President himself who created the SPK and put me in charge, recognizing me as L's successor. After Mello obtained the Death Note, the number of agents was regrettably reduced to three.

Mello's chance to defeat both Kira and me was there, when I-- Near made Kira go out of his comfort zone. Mello could have even witnessed how Kira performs the killings and use the chance to catch him. A hour after everyone had died, there were still no signs of Mello.

Please define Kira's comfort zone. In your estimation, what exactly are its outer boundaries?

The second L, just like L, hides behind that identity. For the first time, he accepted to meet me face to face as L-- as Kira.

Not quite. You or one of your agents must still fill Mello's role.

Interesting interpretation. Based on my own experience with Kira in my world, I would argue that Kira would use the L identity, but not hide behind it. He is both patient and ruthless. Kira has never not been proud of his actions, in my experience.

...Did you insult his pride in order to draw him out? Else, appearing as Kira... well, it appears to me to be excessively stupid either way, insult or no...

Mello fills his own role.

As far as I know, and based on the information I have obtained from the previous Near, Kira will be as interested as meeting me as I will be, for that will be his only chance to see my face and kill me.

Yes, yes, Mello must make his own decisions and so forth. I referred, however, to his role in your plan to trap Kira. His role in most realities is that of the "unnecessary sacrifice", no?

He wouldn't bother killing you unless you posed a very real threat to his plans, or insulted his pride.

...In my experience, that is.

If I plan to save Mello's life, the story is bound to change.

Mello and me became a threat the very moment we came in contact with Kira. I am also sure that I have insulted his pride on more than one occasion.

Well, I know that I insulted his pride... as a means to draw him out. By doing so, that is how I most effectively established myself as a threat to him. There are those who see what they want both in Light and in Kira, and those who see Kira for who he really is. Kira... knew I was in the latter category.

Incidentally, I think that is how I am likely to be killed and why it is that he would be able to take up the name of L unchallenged...
