Second week of school and I am dying already

Jan 25, 2010 21:12

Well, Russian raped me good and hard again...and fuck, we have native speakers in our class now and it's extra rape. I have so much homework it's not even funny, and of course wonderful me, I waited till JUST NOW to do all of it. French history is...decently interesting. Unfortunately I'm the only one in the class who doesn't have like some kind of affinity for it besides not being able to take the WWII history class and yeah. Political systems of East Asia is going ok, though I had to miss today's lecture.

Other than that, I hung out with ranchan03, inuyatta, and Thu on friday night. Friday night was a wonderful reprieve in which I slept early and got to see friends I hadn't seen in so long and oh good wonderful Italian food. I miss my friends dearly at times and I'm just kinda really hating my job more and more each day.

Friday before then was hell since I had three hours of sleep really, but I did finally get to buy rl!Webster's book and because it interested me I bought Webster 2.0 E.B Sledge's book on the Pacific since that's what the March series is going to be based on and the reviews were somewhat decent. I also made sure to get the obligatory Frappachino from the most frazzled employee there as a little side joke.

One of the first things that I guess, woke me up from my idealized view of Band of Brothers!Webster, was finding this in my search for Eion Bailey pictures. And in some stupid way, that makes little to no sense...I was kinda sad to find out that not only does Fandom seem to dislike one of the few characters I relate to, but apparently so did canon if the survivors could count for canon. For some reason I was just so ill at ease for something so trivial and yet my permanent head canon just wanted to go "WAIT WAIT" and shift through all this information.

So, I checked out a few reviews on Webster's book and dug up some more info...to find that the dislike is somewhat justified. Webster, enlisted into the army under the paratroopers and voluntarily skipped out of being in the a higher ranking position, even when he was placed in places that were obviously MEANT to keep him safe and out of harm's way, he refused to do so and was transferred from Headquarter's to Fox, to finally Easy the only company he somewhat respects.

Webster's odd in a sense that he's just way to practical in a place that is the very opposite. He's pretty stubborn in his beliefs and I guess, coming from a well to do family, hadn't ever been ordered around and seen the almost corruption of the higher ranking officers--so when he does witness it over and over. He gets really tired of it really fast, and the army doesn't really do anything to placate him back so...as a result his performance is less than satisfactory. Granted I haven't read much and have skimmed a good lot along the book, but from what I've gleaned, Webster's biggest enemy seems to be himself at times, he's so conflicted when it comes to fighting: he believes it needs to be done, but he has a very strong sense of 'self preservation'. From what I've read he's kind of got a lot of these contradictions.

But how is this different from Band of Brothers? I'm sure a lot of fandom would like to ask since Webster kinda gets portrayed as someone who doesn't really want to be there and is some kind of petulant guy acting too hard to fit in. First off, I was surprised with...how loyal the men are to each other here in the book. Sure, he's not like BFFs with Liebgott and the guy barely seems to show up, but I was almost kinda touched with the reunion at Haguenau--how everyone welcomes him back into the fold, and he recalls being back with friends. He even remarks, that if he had to come back after being injured, he'd rather be with Easy. I was actually surprised at how badly he took Hoobler's, Muck and Penkala's, and Jullian's deaths. Granted he didn't full out baw, but he did just...seem so touched, like it did hit him that good men were dying. Second, how he reacts with the others:

*Speirs: Is kind of really almost cute in here. From the first time Webster meets him, he likes him, and is one of the few COs that ever gets much respect from him. He even makes sure to say goodbye and thank him before he leaves. Btw, you get to see one of the most awesome scenes of Speirs being a badass in the book that you never got to see in the series that I almost wish they did: A higher ranking CO wants the car that Speirs stole for himself and makes upper authority make Speirs give it to him. The result? Speirs trashes the car with armor piercing bullets then drives it off a cliff he jumps out before though. This guy is so awesome.

*Winters, Nixon: I haven't seen either much--Winters is mentioned only a few times, but never with any animosity and usually hanging out with Speirs. Nixon is just mentioned being kinda aloof a lot of the time and oh, being from Yale. they really should've talked or something gawd.

*Luz: I was surprised with how friendly Luz and Webster were. Apparently Luz didn't stay with the company, as he was up somewhere else after being promoted. But in the end, he still shows up from time to time and is always in pretty good spirits. I like Luz a lot here, even when he's away from them, he comes back from time to time to hang out. Also he and Webster raided Hitler's wine together and mutually bitched about the lack of good alchie. Luz is a bro, man, a true bro.

*Cobb, Martin, Compton: Compton seems to have been mentioned once, Martin a little more, though I can't really recall anything that made him stick out if only for the fact, he was in a good mood a lot, which is weird considering how he was in BoB. Cobb is there, somewhat his bitter self, though he's not as far gone as BoB makes it seem like, he seems to really like war. Which is both odd and interesting to Web.

*Christenson, Liebgott, Muck&Penkala: I already stated my disappointment with lack of Liebgott before but, seriously...I think I've found him like twice. I know, I know impure motives but I just like Liebgott in general sometimes, you know? Muck and Penkala are around and they get mentioned once in a while--could be more, I need to get farther. Christenson actually gets mentioned the most out of these guys that I've seen so far--I kind of think it's cute in a weird way, the dynamic him and Web share.

*Peacock: Lol Webster and the men hate this guy--he's kind of, yeahh...part of the reason Web hates the army. I think Peacock has a mutual dislike back. I need to read more about it really.

*Janovec: I stumbled on this on accident and oh god, I almost baww'd. Janovec's death is so much more wrenching to Webster because he actually considered the guy a really good friend, and jesus he was even starting to cry. Webster viewed Janovec as someone who shared his mutual dislike of the army and considered him a good man. When he finds that he died because of a traffic accident doesn't help that the medics are playing cards nearby while they have Webster ID the body--it pushes Webster more into wanting to leave. I think what got me the most, was when leaving the room, he tried to will Janovec to get up. I just aslkdfasdf whyyyyy....

O'Keefe, Garcia, Roe make appearances here and there--they're probably around a lot more often than I know but just have not seen them. There are a lot of other people mentioned here like McCleary, Radar, Miner, V.D--to name a few, that were cut out of BoB that Web took a pretty good record of.

Lastly, Webster isn't someone who distances himself from the men to the point of self-imposed solitude at least not too much--he isn't just bitching to bitch and going on and on how no one likes him. He's just so frustrated and yet still trying to observe. I think one of the best cases of this, is when he starts to get fed up with waiting for his points to arrive so he can go home--or at least join his friends in Zem All See in relaxing instead of training with the replacements for the Pacific. The only reason he was still there was a clinical error and even though everyone pretty much KNEW he had them, he had to wait for the all clear. Frustration just...overrides how well he'd follow the rules and how he'd bite his tongue to the upper ranks and just...show up drunk to PT.

Frustration, caused this guy to do a lot of...well, stupid things. That and practicality, this guy is way too practical to be in a place where reason kind of just...goes in on itself. For example, follow your commanding officers: ok. But if your commanding officers No, not the golden trio or Christenson take to looting from old civilians and all you can do is watch cause who can you very well report them too for abuse of power? You can see how he starts to just keep on chugging with resentment.

Admittedly, my head!canon Webster has taken something of a beating from this, because really sometimes, I just think this guy...kind of had this idea of war and fighting that was just...blown to smithereens pretty much. There's a lot of things about Web, I still don't get--and even as I read on, I kind of still wonder about this guy. I mean, the way he carries on you'd think he'd want to be a officer or have a desk job and yet he rejects the chances he has at them.

I don't know, my head has been filled the past few days with "DRAMA! RUSSIAN! WEBSTER" that...it's kind of weird. Though reading through aka WEB 2.0 EB Sledge's Old Breed, has made me want to...idk have them exchange letters in penpal-y ways of the non-slash variety. For example, I could almost feel Webster raging when I read that Sledge intentionally failed out of Georgetown after the Marines put him in there to be an officer. He said he'd rather be canon-fodder than miss the fight--and jeez, this guy is kind of cool, yo. He's not as wordy as Webster whom I'm wondering was able to fit so much on the scarce notebooks he had but he's just as gripping. I really almost wish they'd all met somehow and just idk...cheered each other on or something.

...It could've happened, but you know not really.

I don't know, I need more Band of Brothers friends who I can harass with this stuff.

All in all last week was...jesus. This week, even though it's just started already has had more than it's fair share of family drama llama and man, is it too late to drop Russian guys?

Everyone else who was struggling with me has dropped and fuckkk, I am so fucking scared. I've been doing shitty the past few days and kind out of it as far as online stuff goes, but yeah...catching up to everyone. I'm hoping that I'll at least pass this test Friday to see if it's worth pursuing or...just leave the fight with my dignity...

webster, public, the pacific, friends, family, geekery, idk, random, i am e-awkward, sledge, band of brothers
