I think of Phoenix Wright as what would happen if you took what laypeople think the law consists of -- a mishmash made up of Judge Judy, Rumpole, The Practice, their bitchy lawyer cousin, etc. etc. -- mixed it with a healthy dose of crack, put a cravat on it, and made it into a video game. *g*

I think Phoenix's reason for defending people is... probably right from a moral point of view though!

Money from corporations' probably a better reason to read law and become a layer than defending the weak. 8D
