Did you read those spoilery season 2 casting sides? They'd certainly answer the ‘why’ a bit. And there was a hint they were *ahem* very close in the s1 finale (evidence) :D

I don't even think there's a Triana in the books (but I may be wrong, I mostly skimmed them lol), although there is a couple of Mord-Sith who love each other in the books, so maybe they're just appropriating that circumstance for their own storylines?

My guess is that they decided to make Cara gay instead of Berdine, another mord-sith in the books. They were probably too lazy to introduce Berdine =P
