*Chapter Thirteen* There Is a Reason This Kid Is Number One in the Country

It was Thursday now and Benji had been watching Joel a little more than he should. He noticed Joel would flinch every time a hand was raised to quickly around him. On Wednesday Nick had started talking about what him and his father were going to do over the four-day weekend causing everyone else to talk about their plans. Benji swears Joel looked like he was going to cry.

Today Joel didn’t want to go to lunch. Benji stayed back with him no matter how much his stomache protested.

Joel had a baseball game after school today. Benji, all though he wasn’t a big baseball fan, decided he’d go, for Joel.

Benji took his seat on the bleachers watching the team warm up. He didn’t care much for it. Joel was in the bullpen warming up for the game tonight. When Joel finally came jogging out to the diamond the crowd went wild screaming number one on the top of their lungs. Benji smiled when he saw Joel’s cheeks grow a few shades of red and give the crowd a nervous smile and small wave. Benji shouted Joel’s name as the crowd died out and felt his cheeks match Joel’s in color when he noticed he was the last one making noise. Joel turned around when he heard his name his eyes fixing with Benji’s. His smile grew more confident as he nodded at Benji removing his cap for the National Anthem.

Play ball.

Joel was brilliant all game. Eight innings of two hit shut out baseball, something rare these days even in the Majors. He’ll tell you it was because Benji was there but everyone in attendance knew he’d be drafted right out of High School.

In the locker room he was getting high fives and pats on the back (and ass) for his effort. Halsey caught him as he was just about to leave.

“What’s up Halsey?” Joel asks leaning up against his locker.

“You’re still going to come to Baltimore with me and my parents this weekend right?”

He totally forgot! But of course he wants to. No one in his or her right mind wants to spend four days with Joel’s dad, “Of course I am,”

“Alright good. We’ll come around seven and get you in the morning,”

Joel nodded as Halsey disappears back into the locker room.

When Joel steps outside the cool air feels good against his hot skin. He almost immediately sees Benji. Joel smiles at him softly.

“Why are you still here?”

“I was waiting for you. By the way you take forever,” Benji says.

“Well if I knew you were waiting for me I wouldn’t of taken so long,” He defends, “So why were you waiting for me,”

“To walk you home, see what your plans are for this weekend,” He tells him as they start down the path to Joel’s house.

“Oh well thanks. But I am going to go to Baltimore with Halsey this weekend actually,” He looks at Benji seeing he’s a little disappointed, “I’m sorry. But I’m just going for baseball. His dad is in the Orioles organization and-”

Benji cuts him off, “It’s fine Joel. If you’re going for baseball its cool,”

“Oh okay. Well here,” He says digging his cellphone out of his pocket, “Give me your cell number and I’ll call you,”

“I-I don’t have one,” He felt stupid admitting it, he seems like the only kid without one these days.

“Oh. Sorry. Just your home number then, I’ll call you when I can,”

Benji nods telling Joel his number and before they know it they’re standing in front of Joel’s house.

“Well I’ll see you later then I guess,” Benji says feeling awkward for the first time around Joel in days.

“Yeah well thanks,” Joel says looking at his feet.

“For what?”

“Just being there for me all week and listening to me and everything,” Joel says quickly and before his brain has time to realize it Benji has his arms wrapped around him.

“You’re welcome Joel,” Benji says into his hair, the smell of Joel’s sweat leaving an unfriendly scent in his nose but he shakes it off not wanting to let go but knows he has to, “I’ll see you later. And you better call me,” Cause if you don’t it will be one boring as hell four days for me

“I will mom” Joel smiles getting a look from Benji, “See ya,” Joel says turning up the driveway and into his house…
