First reports of a "Bat-Man" in Gotham City.
The Batman is first seen with Robin, The Boy Wonder.
Robin, now in his late teens, strikes off on his own, fighting crime largely in nearby Providence.
(approx) The brightly-garbed Batwoman adventures alongside Batman. "Mr. and Mrs. Batman" get caught up in weird time-travel adventures, fight aliens, and basically lead a life of High Weirdness in the middle of the trying-so-hard-to-be-banal '50s.
Batman changes his costume, adding a gold oval to his chest insignia. Robin returns as his partner, looking substantially younger. Most people assume that this is a new Robin; since his older predecessor is not seen again, the general consensus is that the "old Robin" was killed in action.
After adopting the "New Look", Batman is frequently spotted fighting alongside the Justice League of America. The "new" Robin is quite publicly the leader of the Teen Titans. Batman is no longer haunts Gotham alone: he is sighted in locations all around the globe. There's a controversy among conspiracy theorists as to whether there's a worldwide "League of Batmen", or if his supernatural powers allow him to appear out of nowhere to punish the wicked.
Batgirl appears.
Robin, now obviously a man in his 20s, dons a new costume -- this one with long pants.
The Huntress appears, and, along with Power Girl, joins the revived Justice Society of America.
The Titans re-form, no longer "Teens". Robin again leads them.
Robin suddenly "gets young" again, returns to short pants, and takes his place at Batman's side. A new hero, Nightwing, appears; it's generally assumed that this is the "old" Robin, since he seamlessly takes over the leadership of the Titans.
Batman is no longer seen with the Justice League, though sightings and rumors tentatively connect him with a band of other dark, shadowy superhumans.
The First Crisis. Everyone learns about it in school; Other than strange red skies and a rash of amnesia, nobody really knows quite what was happening. Superman and other high-profile superhumans talk about a "threat to all reality itself". Superwoman dies; her funeral is a huge, public affair. In the din, nobody but Gothamites notice that Batgirl isn't seen again.
Nightwing disappears, and is presumed dead.
Robin vanishes. Batman operates without a partner for the first time since 1940.
Robin reappears, in long pants and a black cape.
After a mass break-out from Arkham Asylum, Batman takes a severe beating -- enough to cripple a mortal man. A few days later, he reappears, taking down his assailant. Over the next few months, he takes on an ever more frightening, uncompromising demeanor as he pursues the other Arkham escapees, adding armor and weaponry to his costume. At the height of this crusade, it's rumored that he allowed the serial killer Abbatoir to plummet to his death.
Batman returns to his traditional costume, though the blues have been replaced with deep black.
(Rumors insist that there was an epic confrontation between "Crazy Armor Batman" and "The Real Batman", one firing missiles and lasers while the other summoned angry bat-demons from Hell itself.)
Once again, Robin disappears from the scene, and again, someone calling himself Nightwing patrols the streets of Providence.
"The Clench", a strain of the Ebola virus, ravages Gotham, and the city is quarantined.
Still recovering from the plague, Gotham is struck by an earthquake. The city is cut off from the rest of the country; FEMA mismanagement leads to accusations that the Federal Government has just discarded the city entirely. For more than a year, Gotham is a lawless No Man's Land of rival gangs -- including one "gang" of police officers, struggling to keep order in a city with no federal aid or functioning legal system.
Brief, unconfirmed rumors of a new Robin. Some claim that it's a blonde girl in the costume.
Gotham erupts in a massive gang war that keeps the city in a state of outright war for days. Deserved or not, much of the blame falls upon the Batman and his associates, especially when Batman usurps command of the Gotham PD and leads them into a tactical debacle. Many people, including members of the media and Gotham Police Commissioner Akins, publicly state that the "Batman Family" has become just another gang out to control Gotham.
In the aftermath of the gang war, Robin, Nightwing, the Huntress, and other members of the "Batman Family" vanish from the scene. The Batman adopts another new costume, this one a technologically-advanced black and red skinsuit with flight capabilities.
The Second Crisis. Just as vague as the first. Batman sacrifices himself to save, so the other heroes claim, "everything". After this point, no costumed protector lasts more than six months on the streets of Gotham.
